The best time to reopen would have been June or July 2023, since the summer is more forgiving, said Liang Wannian, an epidemiologist-turned senior official leading China’s Covid response, in an interview with state television on Monday. However, immunity generated from vaccinating the high-risk elderly would have ebbed, he said.

The summer of 2022 wasn’t a good time to reopen since elderly vaccination rates then were low, he said. Immunization has since climbed to 80%, offering more protection, he said.

The idea was probably to finish the process of herd immunity before new years so they can get the economic dividends of that.

After the South Korean suspension of short-term visa issuance for Chinese nationals, we now have China's tit for tat response.
While reciprocity is the standard response in diplomatic affairs, suspending short-term visas cuts off tourist visits and hurts your own tourism industry.

Instead, I think China should enact measures more directly targeted at the economies of countries that imposed travel restrictions on China. For example, for any country that imposed China specific travel restrictions after the lifting of COVID zero, their businesses in China would be placed back under strict COVID zero conditions, i.e., completely shutdown given the current state of COVID spread. After all, if these countries are so concerned about China lifting COVID zero, China is only being helpful in re-imposing COVID zero restrictions on their businesses.

SK population is miniscule compared to say Europe or America. They are also western lapdogs. Perfect target to show who is boss. Just like they had kowtow to the son of heaven for thousands of years, this time they have to kowtow again.

China doesn't care about the few tourists they get from SK or anywhere outside really. Too many local Chinese tourists already especially for CNY. And it's Chinese people working in those foreign owned companies, they don't need to suffer. This is an adequate response.

As though we need more proof that Chinese female diaspora "journalist/commentator" is one of the worst in terms of bashing anything China. BTW, I have no interest or patience to read her article. I'm just curious why her mother did not take any vaccine? Because she told her mother that Chinese vaccines were no good?

CanSino's mRNA vaccine is effective against some Omicron sub-variants during the phase II clinical trial.

Some of the local "journalist" got detected at the lock down protest and group chat. They have been invited for multiple tea visits. Not shocking, but the gov is claiming they are movement leaders

There is report that Chinese authority is negotiating with Pfizer to manufacture Paxlovid domestically.

Good news: Chinese CDC is still giving daily updates of vaccinations, although they stopped daily report of cases (those will be reported monthly).
