Really funny how the two people this thread is praising for their insight turned out to repeat the same views that I expressed in this thread and was attacked for.

Why would he use the wording "much more devastating" then? Those are very heavy words. Keep in mind this article is much more recent than the VOA one. He may have revised his assessment.

Jin Dong-yan was one of the experts who kept telling Hong Kongers throughout all of 2021 to stop taking 'useless' inactivated vaccines and go for MRNA instead. Of course, what actually happened is elderly people get easily scared by a scare campaign and decided against getting a vaccine shot.

One of his biggest contributions to Hong Kong public health death.

Lifting any travel restrictions before the Chinese New Year is the right move. After China is rampant with COVID, there is no reason to continue any travel restrictions. COVID would peak around mid-Jan for most places so it is time to welcome laborers and international students home.

If I am a Western media propagandist for criticizing the numbers before, then what is Hu Xijin? Hu said essentially the same thing in his WeChat post, which was posted in the China News Thread. Evidently he would've been derided as a Western propagandist despite being editor of The Global Times. This thread just doesn't care about logical consistency.

I didn't say I agreed with him. My posts always argued China would do much better than Hong Kong but not much better than Taiwan.

Irregardless of what the reality on the ground is in China with Covid. China scores another zero when it comes to the PR. Why redefine Covid death's as only people that have died from pneumonia. And only report 8 deaths after 7 december. You must be out of your mind to believe that ONLY 8 people have died from Covid in the two weeks following the lifting of the restrictions. This is turning China into a laughing stock in the world and is opening the door for attacks against China on the international stage. It allows people with bad faith to spung whatever story they want about China's Covid situation and can make it stick to a certain degree. It does the government no good domestically either as it turns people more synical about everything the government says.

In addition to the protests, the Chinese government's budget deficit this year is a whopping 1 trillion, that's US dollars not Yuan. Basically, if you're still wondering why the government's exit strategy on COVID seems to be progressing at such lightning pace and simultaneously all over the place, the exit strategy is simply to scrub their hands of this whole ordeal as fast as possible because they know they made a huge mistake.

Its haphazard as hell, but 2022 has already been a big enough blow to the government's credibility as is. With a highly vaccinated population, life is already returning back to normal for the vast majority of Chinese. Yes, lots of elderly who did not get vaccinated are being hospitalized, certainly more are dying than the officially reported 6, but really at this point if you still choose to remain adamant in your skepticism towards modern medicine then more power to your choice as long as you're willing to own up to the consequences. The Western media will have its fun, but once infections finally peak and China gets back to normal, then that would mean the world will be fully back to normal as well. And once this whole thing is behind us, there's bigger fish to fry so hopefully by then the government will have wisened up because for all the mistakes they made, 1.4 billion Chinese still depend on them.

China should continue to roll out en masse the CanSino Ad5 inhaled vaccine, update it and other vaccines for the latest Omicron variants, as well as continue to invest in and approve other mucosal vaccines that have a chance of sterilizing immunity like the live attenuated nasal vaccine being developed and tested by HKU. This could dramatically reduce the future burden of post-acute sequelae in China that the rest of the world has been facing with endemic COVID, ensuring that China definitively comes out ahead in terms of economic productivity and overall population health.

Constructive criticism of the government is not allowed here. You will be branded a west loving propagandist. So why even debate here.
