SCMP is at it again. Giving voice to this piece of crap drama queen Hanjian in the US. He is an Art student there. Surprise surprise.
This piece of garbage is wearing multi-layers of PPEs and acting out his suffering as a 'protest act'. It's a massive disrespect to the millions of Chinese who don these PPEs while on duty. Those real Chinese can work for dozens of hours in these suits per day, for over 2 years.
No matter how negative the impact of China's Zero Covid Policy, it still saved millions of Chinese lives. China suffered 5k+ deaths up to 2022 vs the US's over 1M deaths. No contest. Lives is more important. Freedom and money cannot bring back the dead. China's government ultimately made the right choice for its people. If some idiots don't like that, then it's none of their God-damned business. They are not in charge of China.
Lives are freedom. Money can both come from freedom and lack of freedom, it's just a question of how competently the economy is managed.
Patients in China are free to opt out of treatment or only take palliative options if they want to avoid healthcare, but the difference is that they're actually offered a freedom of choice to get treatment or not, not just left behind to die because they're considered too old or having too many preexisting conditions.
Every life saved is someone's parent, child, spouse and so on. They're not just statistics, but people who go on and pass their happiness on to those near them with their continued good health.
You cannot have freedom without basic human rights, otherwise you might as well tell me places like Somalia has the highest freedom in the world because people there do whatever the fuck they like, no medical care, no doctors, no ordinations. Fact is, a life without happiness, in pain, is devoid of all freedom.
Patients have the right to get the best possible care given local resources. This should be a non negotiable goal regardless of healthcare anywhere in the world.
China's choice to prioritize science, health and consequently, freedom, is not just the right choice for its people but the right choice globally. Failure to acknowledge that is borderline quackery.
What level of death are people comfortable with? Every year, tens of thousands die from flu and other viruses in China. Once COVID mortality has been reduced to a similar level, controls should end, shouldn't they?
I think it really boils down to whether omicron is just a flu.
China doesn't want millions of disabled people with long covid. You can do the long covid experiment in the rest of the world, China should be the control in this experiment.
Lockdowns aren't zero cost either. We should watch Hong Kong carefully this winter. If Hong Kong can live with covid, so can the rest of China

No Thank You. China doesn't want shitty HK covid policies. There is a reason why HK-SZ borders still aren't fully open and won't be for a long time.
If China pursued the same path as Hong Kong, then it would be 1.4 million deaths within 3-4 months. Hong Kong outbreak during Chinese New Year has caused almost 8000 deaths which is roughly equal to 1.4 million for China.
However, China does closely monitor the situation in Hong Kong as it provides important insight of the virus and efficacy of new Chinese vaccines and effects of long covid. More importantly, China can trust the HK data as it is much more reliable as it is being monitored directly.
