China has a 90% vaccination rate.... that's very high compared to US has a 67% vaccination rate.
What is the purpose of posting this "comment letter" that doesn't even have an abstract or full-text available? It's not even accessible by my university login. Can you post the full "comment letter" ?

Most Chinese have had 1 or 2 vaccines rather than 4 to 5. Granted, the individual boosters might be more effective, but still.
Also 90 is not much compared to some western countries like Israel which still had far greater issues with the virus. I was mainly thinking about those in my example, obviously China will be somewhat ahead than US because of a stronger healthcare system, but the western countries with the best healthcares are still ahead of China.

If you look closely at the data, the efficacy rate includes only symptomatic cases.
Efficacy could be much lower if asymptomatic cases are included which would then require the testing of all the participants on a regular basis.

It is no wonder that China dare not open up, due to less effective traditional vaccines, and lower rates of boosters taken. But they keep on testing people every couple of days, spending billions of $$ while wasting hundreds of billions of real GDP production.
The local mRNA vaccines have been tested for a long time, but still no news about them being administered.
Because they're not more effective, the vaccines already used are already one of the best if not the best in the world, hence why covid deaths has almost been completely eliminated. There is no better covid protection one can get with current research.
People taking boosters or not is mainly a question of compliance. The govt can't force most people to have several shots. When you have mostly covid free society, there will always be those who think "why should I get vaccine when I'm not at risk and there's no risk here anyways".
I’m sure the government can force you to get a shot. If you don’t get a booster. Your health code turns red. Good luck going to work, going shopping, going anywhere.
