The difference between Beijing and Shanghai is that Beijing has conducted mass testing for over 90% of its population and found only a few dozens cases. It's unlikely that Beijing covid cases would get out of control since the
transmission chain isn't too complicated and contact and trace still possible.
Yep. Unlikely Beijing will turn into Shanghai 2.0 given they've done 3(?) rounds of mass testing across the entire city whereas Shanghai waited until cases were in the thousands. By that point a lockdown was the only option. Beijing looks to be going the way of Shenzhen/Guangzhou but we are not out of the woods yet given the transmissibility of this virus.

I don't know why some of you expressed :( "SAD" on my comment. When our government lift the mask mandate means we are confident enough to tame the virus. When there are only a little more than a dozen new cases a day, I don't see why we still have to wear mask in the public like while I'm riding motorcycle. I don't think virus would fly in from the air. As for closed area where aircon are on, yes, we better put our masks on.

Wow... " a little more than a dozen new cases a day".

It doesn't quite square with the narratives of those naysayers, mostly from the West, that Chinese Covid vaccines at best don't work that well.

Meanwhile South Korea, 100% vaccinated with entirely mRNA vaccine is topping the Hopkins Covid-19 Dashboard with over 4 million infections in the past 28 days. o_O

Edit:

Indonesia: 39397 cases in the past 28 days, with more than 5 times South Korea's population.

No price for guessing Indonesia uses mostly what type of vaccines.

Today we get 5 new cases, all are Omicron. A total of 14,437 Omicron cases have been found since it broke into our community. Of course these are official numbers, the real ones might be a little different. I am not sure it's the credit of the type of vaccines we use but we did have an vaccine campaign while everyone was still busy grabbing western mRNA vaccines, our government announced to take China as the strategic reliance for vaccine supply. So I believe that the non discriminated and early vaccination did help us survive the pandemic.

Chinese research team designs new COVID-19 vaccine shown to be effective against Omicron

By Global Times Published: Apr 28, 2022 01:45 AM

A Chinese research team has adopted a new strategy to design a new COVID-19 vaccine that has shown to be highly effective in mice and macaques against infections by Delta and Omicron strains.

The team that published this discovery was led by Gao Fu, Director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Wang Peiyi, professor at the Southern University of Science and Technology, and Dai Lianpan, researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The team's latest paper, "Protective prototype-Beta and Delta-Omicron chimeric RBD-dimer vaccines against SARS-CoV-2," was included in Cell, a top-ranking biology journal on Tuesday.

The researchers previously developed the protein subunit vaccine ZF2001 based on dimeric receptor-binding domain (RBD) of prototype SARS-CoV-2. In the latest study, the team developed a chimeric RBD-dimer vaccine approach to adapt to SARS-CoV-2 variants.

A prototype-Beta chimeric RBD-dimer was first designed to adapt to the resistant Beta variant. Compared with its homotypic forms, the chimeric vaccine elicited broader sera neutralization of variants and conferred better protection in mice. The protection of the chimeric vaccine was further verified in macaques, according to the researchers.

This approach was generalized to develop a Delta-Omicron chimeric RBD-dimer to adapt to the currently prevalent variants. The vaccine conferred better protection against either Delta or Omicron SARS-CoV-2 in mice.

As breakthrough infections by COVID-19 variants become the global challenge for pandemic control, the chimeric approach is applicable for rapid updating of immunogens. The data supported the use of variant-adapted multivalent vaccine against circulating and emerging variants, the researchers say.

Previously, ZF2001, the world's first approved COVID-19 protein subunit vaccine, was developed and produced from a pre-design concept developed by Gao Fu's team and approved for emergency use in China, Uzbekistan, Indonesia and Colombia.

Recently, vaccine studies by other Chinese research teams have also caught the attention of the international academic community. A circular RNA vaccine reported by Wei Wensheng's team at the Peking University and a nanoparticle vaccine by Zhang Hui's team at the Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences, have both shown to be effective against Omicron in laboratory trials.

Their studies are believed to play a key role in technology leadership in future vaccine development, observers noted.

I was trying to point out the danger and irresponsibility of politicizing the effectiveness of vaccines based on their countries of origin.

Had Cambodia and Indonesia been influenced by the politizing of the effectiveness of vaccines and decided to refuse or delay the use of certain vaccines, things would have been very different in these 2 countries.

Potentially more people could die in Shanghai than in Wuhan?

So only something like 400 new confirmed cases in Shanghai if we don't count the conversion from asymptomatic?

For Beijing: 47 new cases, 2 new asymptomatic carriers.
