Coronavirus 2019-2020 thread (no unsubstantiated rumours!)

How many of these positive covid tests in Shanghai are fake? I remember many covid tests were fake positive in the west. These tests are not 100% effective. So if you tests 25 million ppl, it's not possible to have 0 covid.
I'm not sure how much of them are false positive, but it should be statistically insignificant, China does multiple testing in order to make sure almost all cases get caught and to get a more accurate number, and I recall those sent to quarantine isolation will still be tested for covid until they are cleared.

I believe i read somewhere that China uses an systematic batch testing methodology that efficiently and statistically reduce false positive instances to practically zero. Not competent enough to go into details and also don't know if the same methodology is being applied in Shanghai.

Most of the false positive results in the West in the early days are due to the fact that they are using RAT not PCR. PCR has a very high accuracy and China is doing multiple tests for every individuals in order to make sure every case is found.

These expatriates who threatened to leave Hong Kong forever are coming back. Same thing with Shanghai, don't need to worry too much about people leaving.

These people shouldn't be taken seriously lol, its like those democrat supporters declaring they'll leave for Canada if Trump got voted. Moving to another country and staying there is a lot harder and expensive for most people.

these fair weather people will take off the moment there is hint of slightest hardship. They obviously have no deep attachment to the place they work and live in. Might be a good dress rehearsal before real thing to weed out those type of foreign expats. Unless they are really talented, it’s no loss to China.

Any idea why cases spiked up to 20k again after a few days of trending downwards?

Due to reopening of some districts, community spread has increased in a few areas. That's why they have tightened up again and mass testings have increased. So we are getting more cases. Even though many districts have not detected cases for 14 days but these districts are still surrounding by other high risk areas and spillover is just too easy.

They should make the condition for districts to open up, if every bordering district around it also didn't detect cases for 14 days. Kind of like having a border state to prevent hostile countries having a direct access to your territory for war.

Yeah...because Hong Kong (and SH) with ongoing cases are still orders of magnitude safer than western cities. These foreign "workers", reporters, teachers pedos, whatever.... returning to HK is indeed bad news, they put the city at risk again.

Wanwanese making a copy of TCM Lianhua Qingwen... which is so effective, even sceptics in Hong Kong were stunned and paid double the price during the 5th covid wave in March.

On a day when Taiwan authorities reported the biggest one-day increase of COVID-19 infections, local media reports said the island was running out of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to fight the virus. Since the outbreak of the epidemic, Taiwan has followed the footsteps of the mainland, insisting on a dynamic-zero policy and using traditional Chinese medicine as a treatment.

Taiwan-based media outlet udn.com reported on Saturday that amid a spike in infections Taiwan's health authority had offered NRICM101, the island-developed herbal medicine, to home-quarantine patients for free.

The anti-COVID authorities in Taiwan on Saturday reported 4,123 new locally transmitted cases, the highest daily figure ever. Demand for TCM has soared, causing shortages, Taiwan media reports said.

The Global Times learned from Taiwan residents on Saturday that like people in the mainland, people in Taiwan also have the habit of taking TCM and trust it very much.

Despite the US-made oral medicine Molnupiravir being imported to the island in February, Taiwan people believe that the combination of TCM and Western medicine is the best way to prevent disease, a Taiwan resident surnamed Chou told the Global Times.

It is worth mentioning that most of the raw materials for Chinese herbal medicine made in Taiwan are procured from the mainland, Taiwan-based media reports noted.

However, after health platform Dingxiang Yisheng published an article advising the public not to take Lianhua Qinwen as a preventive medicine, some Taiwan media outlets wrote groundless reports claiming that Lianhua Qingwen could cause stomach and kidney damage. These reports ignored the fact that Lianhua Qingwen and NRICM101 are both based on ancient Chinese remedies that are more therapeutic than preventive.

Wang Yu-Ching, a Taiwan cross-Straits observer from Peking University, told the Global Times on Saturday that Taiwan's NRICM101 is basically a copy of Lianhua Qingwen, which was first released in 2004.

"If Lianhua Qingwen is really bad, then why did Taiwan imitate it? This is a brazen double-standard of scolding something and benefitting from it at the same time," Wang said.

Taiwan secessionists who advocate de-Sinicization are criticizing traditional Chinese medicine on the mainland while making it themselves on the island, Wang said, adding that their efforts to cut themselves off from China will prove impossible.
