It's incredible how many people in the West and on social media want to see mass graves in China, including people I would considered reputable.
At the moment, covid vaccine is category 2 vaccine which can't be mandated to be vaccinated to everyone. However, the government probably is concerned about the adverse affects of forced vaccination. People would blame the government if their parents and grandparents pass away after vaccination even if vaccines might have nothing to do with it. Most elderly especially those over 80s have long term diseases that could died suddenly which would become a major social problems.
The west no longer cares. There will be no more restrictions, let alone lockdowns. They're just going to tank wave after wave of COVID in the face for god knows how many years and suffer as many deaths and infections as that strategy necessitates.
The power of Big Business.
Thanks to the Billionaires, big Corporations, and Wall St., the Big Business consortium are using their influence to override epidemiologists/scientist at CDC via political pressure. It's the same allies China will co-opt to overturn more tariffs, ostensibly to alleviate inflation, but reality is these American capitalists will sell-out their own mother/grandparents for a quick buck.
Beside that. It is no longer politically viable either. The last survey was like 60% living paycheck to paycheck and we all know if they lock down again there won’t be any free money or support. It will be the easiest landslide victory for Republicans.

Shanghai’s leaders should be fired and punished for their incompetence. It’s such a shitshow: the delay / initial inaction, the poorly organized lockdown with supplies problems, the stupid policy of separating children from parents, etc.

Agreed, an opportunity to purge the opposing faction and remove corrupt officials. Incompetence cannot be tolerated.
Although the central government doesn't want to force people to vaccinate, it doesn't mean they don't see the urgency to vaccinate elderly especially after what happened in HK.
Most common methods are going house to house, providing transport, using incentives, convincing the veterans, using elderly to convince elderly, asking government officials that want a promotion to mobilize elderly to vaccinate, and buying vaccines insurance for the elderly etc.

On the contrary, the current mayor is Xi Jinping's lapdog. Shanghai will 100% do better under Jiang's leadership than it is doing now. Yesterday the licking dog mayor was abused by citizens when he went out to do research because he asked questions that represented he had no idea how citizens are relying on to buy supplies now. Another point of reference about the prices in Shanghai now, before the closure a 500ml bottle of Coca Cola was 2.9 RMB, now a bottle of Coca Cola has reached a staggering 7.5 RMB! I have to say I'm disappointed that it's been two weeks and the government still hasn't solved the problem of supplies.
