Carrie Lam failed to close the loopholes of airline crews when many experts including mainland Chinese experts told her to do so. When Omicron got into Hong Kong, Carrie Lam didn't act fast enough to tackle the crisis. Everyone knew that it is a disaster waiting to happen when Carrie Lam didn't implement more restrictions during the Chinese News Year.

Of course, it is the Hong Kong opposition media misinformation that caused most elderly to not get vaccinated but Carrie Lam if she has listened to mainland experts by vaccinating young adults first like mainland China did then those media might not be able to sabotage the vaccination penetration in elderly. Beside, she has one year to find a way to force those elderly to vaccinate but she keeps waiting and waiting until the disaster strikes.
Singapore has lots of airline crew coming in. They don't have the same problem. Hong Kong people always fly in or out when needed.

Surprising non political article from WSJ. This is something I think a number of people were thinking for a while. Olympics was always going to be a test run for phased reopening and how does the current HK issues present (worst case scenario or 7/10?).

Also mentioned mRNA vaccines, but didn’t mention heterologous boosters and other 2nd gen vaccines besides mRNA which will play a role. Haven’t heard much from UAE which is the only user of the new Sinopharm booster, which could be a good thing (ie no reports of major side effects, although probably limited use)

I was imagining reopening phase 1 will be similar to the old SEZ internal border control. From what I can tell, that’s not far off from what they did at the Olympic village. I imagine a reduced quarantine district probably starting with SZ. SZ is probably ideal since the population is younger and many expats. Phase 2 will probably be something like University campuses and Multinational factory areas.

To deal with keeping people away from flooding hospitals, they should set up more minor health care centres and make it clear that people without major symptoms should check in there first. Basically update the “barefoot doctor” system for the 21st century. This is not an original idea of mine as I’ve read many articles about how the government wants to do this to reduce the stress on hospitals (as I understand, going straight to the hospital is the default option) and better meet the needs of rural people who do not have major hospitals
