Does anyone know when France and Germany will recognize Sinopharm as valid for traveling?
Both countries suppose to allow people vaccinated with Sinovac or Sinopharm into their countries with a proof of negative PCR test on Jan 10. Not sure if it has been implemented yet.

A super wave of Omicron is coming to Asia. Hopefully, it wouldn't cause a crisis like Delta.

Same for BNT-Pfizer and Moderna. All mRNA vaccines so far are really 3-shots vaccines.

Also the letter SCMP cited was mostly about the development of their Omicron-specific vaccine candidates. However it's not clear how successful they are as the letter provides no comparison data for their original vaccine candidate. It only mentions that "antibody titers induced by ARCoV-Omicrons were comparable to the original mRNA vaccine ARCoV", which is unclear whether it's comparable to original ARCoV's neutralizing antibody level against the wild-type or Omicron.

In any case, the 3-shots ARCoV result looks solid with as its neutralizing antibody level is only 40% less against Omicron vis-à-vis wild type. However, remember the result was based on an extremely unrealistic 300 day gap between the second and third shots.

It's actually bad news for mRNA vaccines because the specially designed Omicron-specific vaccine was not able to solve the problem of the 40% reduced efficacy of the original ARCoV vaccine.

It would be a game-changer in the battle of the vaccines if inactivated or virus vector Omicron-specific vaccine turn out to be much more successful.

Am I missing something because I don't get it?
In the early days WHO suggested that vaccines should have a minimum of 50% efficacy rate for them to be used for vaccination. Yet here in NZ and most probably other countries as well, Pfizer with an efficacy rate of below 30% for Omicron is given to folks who are getting vaccinated for the first time.

Variants are mutating so quickly, so everyone is inevitably infected, vaccinated/boosted or not. By the time we have a great vaccine against one variant, another one pops up. We never win, kinda like the influenza shot which is only 30% efficacy.

BUT , the silver liniing is, even against new variants, we have really strong +80% protection against severe disease, hospitalization, and death, whether it's mRNA or inactivated vaccines. so the best we can do is be vaccinated, boosted. I'm not sure what else we can do as society, except wait for better anti-virals drugs for severe cases or wait until the virus mutates less severely (which is not guaranteed)?

That effectively makes vaccination status irrelevant, right? It would be exactly the same as China is doing, vacinated or not, one must be tested negative to get in the country.

Even inside EU, vaccination certification is not neccesarily enough to cross borders within the block. See here,

To me, in light of Omicron, I don't really see vaccine recognition has any real value, it is only and will remain as a political matter.

"Playing dumb" is exactly the word. Meanwhile, the media is stoking the fire by blaming continued infections on those "unvaccinated plebs" whole ignoring the well documented fact that the vaccinated are also infectious.
Yesterday we had close to 1200 cases. Of the 52 hospitalized 49 were fully vaccinated and 2 unvacinated.

With a so low protection effectiveness, vaccination is actually counter productive in preventing the spread, it will create lot of asymptomatic or light symptomatic people to further spread the virus.

Effectively, these vaccines are becoming a precautionary medicine treatment rather than serving to stop the infection spreading.
