Seems like Canada is in same bad way as australia, over here our brilliant government have decided to close down some testing sites , changed the definition of a close contact, not provided enough RATs, discouraged hospital visits, and not include results of those tests done privately at home. I suspect to keep official number of cases down.even with these underhanded measures, our cases are still going up at record high.
They want to reopen. England has already decided to basically stop bothering with covid

As I have said previously, the way things are going, by the end of February the West will reopen fully. The only variable is a possible emergence of a more lethal variant..

Im now hearing claims that getting a booster shot can increase one's chances of getting omicron.... damm.
I'm hearing this from my brother and friends. His wife is a chef at a very upmarket restaurant in Melbourne and she along side some other staff were given a booster a few weeks earlier. It was amongst this group that got infected with Omicron from another staff member who has since been classified as a super spreader. A few days later my brother who also has had a booster went down with Omicron as well. I think they are classifying it as a super spreader event because the number of cases stemming from this outbreak to is now over a hundred and the number of cases in Victoria/Melbourne jumping from an average of 2k to tens of K during the same period.

P.S. By the way to my knowledge, they had Pfizer boosters.

My kids went back to school in China during the height of the pandemic. This is what US schools should learn.

  • My children went back to school while we lived in China in 2020.
  • Strict policies helped keep children in school throughout the year.
  • There are a number of lessons the US can take away from our experience.
Back to school shouldn't be this painful, so full of worry. My family's previous "back to school" was in September 2020, in Beijing,

It felt safer there than in Orlando, Florida, where we are now. In Beijing, we went through multiple months with no COVID-19 infections in the city, even before there was a vaccine available.

First off, Im sorry to hear about that. I hope they recover without any problems. If they can avoid the hospital and long baul damage, that would be great news. Now, I'm regards to your hypothesis, that phenomenon seems more like a correlation than a causation. Vaccines are neither cause infections nor increase the changes of getting infected. Here are other more probable reasons:

1. We know that cloth masks and boosters are definitely not enough to prevent infection. Double masks and N95's are definitely enough to prevent infection for a certain amount of time. So mask quality could be a reason.
2. People with Omicron output much higher viral loads than those with previous variants since Omicron resides predominantly in the upper respiratory system. This decreases the infection time. Hence, wearing a bad mask or no mask at all can get you almost certainly infected even if you are outside.
3. Working in buildings without excellent ventilation traps the virus. Considering the reasons above and your description of the situation, this reason along with reasons 2 and maybe 1 may have caused the infections.

In short, I highly doubt the boosters are increasing your chances of getting infected.

People get easily confused so to simplify matters:
Omicron can easily bypass 2-dose vaccines and infect a person
However, any 2-dose vaccine will still offer protection against hospitalisation and death.

You will most likely get a sore threat, some fever and that's it

That is the simple explanation, probably sufficient for most people. However, now we have so many stories about "neutralizing antibodies", "vaccine efficacy", etc. Everyone thinks they are an expert, but really we are looking a case of "a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing".

might be not be actively smearing sinovac but definitely went in hard on negative reports. I remember reading more than one article on how sinovac is ineffective on their front page . But they didn’t have any articles to give any counter arguments. It was only WHO came out to defend it then they back track. It’s typical of scmp to play both sides again and even regurgitation of western media but to do this for sinovac when omicron is rearing ominously is really poor form.

I don't think SCMP is "playing both sides" necessarily, I think they are a byproduct of their history and environment. Classic case of "Medium is the message". It is a English-language publication in HK, that means historically the newspaper was primarily consumed by the colonialists. With this baggage in tow, many of the writers attracted to it will naturally be tilted towards the Western viewpoint. It's funny because I find a lot of Chinese-siding people see it as another Western mouthpiece. While Western publications see it as a CCP mouthpiece because it's owned by Alibaba (Aside: Weren't western publications quick to say Jack Ma was disappeared by the CCP?).

New variants usually become more contagious while less virulent.

China's speed is again on display in Zhengzhou city, capital of central China's Henan Province, in the latest mass nucleic acid testing which started on Friday. Reports say Zhengzhou has completed the sampling of 12.6 million residents in just 6 hours -- 2.1 million people per hour or 583 residents per second.

Observers say this is a swifter response than that of Xi'an's, a city that has reported more than 1,900 cases so far as it has fought the latest COVID-19 flare-up. It shows that Zhengzhou city has obviously learnt a lesson from Xi'an, where some local health officials have been punished for negligence.

Allegedly more Chinese cities in lockdown, any Chinese news? I won't post western fake news.

I'm in Shenzhen. We had 2 cases yesterday. I believe the whole city was tested after that. I got tested last night around 10:30. There were a few hundred people there with 8 test stations. We were pooled into groups of 10. The lines moved quickly. The whole process took 10 mins after I got there. This afternoon my health code was updated to show a negative result within the past 48 hours. It was a painless process. Everyone was very cooperative. I don't think there is any new case today, but I'm expecting they may pop up from the tests done yesterday. If so, we may have to be tested in another couple of days. They did do contact tracing on the original 2 cases and found around 100 close and secondary contacts and probably isolated them.

There is no lockdown. But some apartment complexes require showing a negative test result within the past 48 hours on the health code to enter.
