I've been quoting Caixin a lot in my posts but I've lost a lot of respect for them for sensationalist non-sense like these. There is a fine line between investigative journalism that gives us facts and sensationalist reporting that misleads. Full genome sequencing of a virus is not the same thing as identifying an outbreak, which is a epidemiological rather than biological concept. And no, you can't just look at the RNA of a virus and immediately tell how infectious it is. Seriously it is the time to require science journalists to have a PhD in the field they report on.

I'm reading the article, and my view is that it is very factual.

And that the title is an accurate description of what happened.

Seriously, the chartists here should think about preparing charts for Italy, South Korea, Japan , Iran, USA and other countries as we
see Phase 2 becoming full blown.

No it's not factual because it deliberately omitted a very important piece of information. The article is an English version of an article I linked earlier, but it omitted the fact (which was mentioned in the Chinese original) that the Chinese law on infectious disease control requires all pathogenic studies of infectious diseases to be carried out at labs authorized by the Chinese CDC. In my earlier post I suggest that maybe in the future relevant law can be revised.

Nevertheless, the law is the law and even the law itself is prudent. You DO NOT WANT samples of potentially highly infectious and deadly virus to be handled by commercial or public genomics labs without adequate bio-security measures. Another fact that it omitted from the English article but present in the Chinese original is that the first commercial lab that first sequenced the RNA of SARS-COV-2 immediately order a complete disinfection process of the entire lab because they realized what they're dealing with. The point of those omissions is clearly to downplay the bio-security and legal issues involved and thus play up the official cover-up narrative.

This is a deliberate move on the part of Caixin's English language team, and a clear breach of journalistic ethics.

... But Shanghai scientists were not far behind. According to a report in Health News (健康报), the official publication of China’s National Health Commission, the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center (上海市公共卫生临床中心) had isolated a new strain of coronavirus by January 5, within just 10 days of its receiving samples from patients in Wuhan on December 26, and scientists at the center had obtained the entire genome sequence.

So where are all those big mouth China basher. Not only the issue with the test kit But my understanding all the test is centralized from Atlanta. god have mercy if this is in emergency

“We’re weeks behind because we had this problem,” said Scott Becker, chief executive officer of the Association of Public Health Laboratories, which represents 100 state and local public laboratories. “We’re usually up-front and center and ready.”

that surveillance testing would begin in five key cities, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. That effort has not yet begun.

On Wednesday, under pressure from health experts and public officials, the CDC and the FDA told labs they no longer had to worry about the portion of the test intended “for the

of SARS-like coronaviruses.” After three weeks of struggle, they could now use the test purely to check for the presence of COVID-19.

It remains unclear whether the CDC’s move on Wednesday will resolve all of the problems around the test. Some local labs have raised concerns about whether the CDC’s test is fully reliable for detecting COVID-19.

In New York, scientists at both the city’s and state’s laboratories have seen false positives even when following the CDC’s latest directions, according to a person familiar with their discussions.

“Testing for coronavirus is not available yet in New York City,” city Department of Health spokeswoman Stephanie Buhle said in an email late Thursday. “The kits that were sent to us have demonstrated performance issues and cannot be relied upon to provide an accurate result.”

China to donate epidemic prevention materials to Japan
Updated 23:10, 29-Feb-2020
CGTN

The Chinese government will donate 5,000 sets of protective clothing and 100,000 masks to Japan in batches, the first two of which arrived in Tokyo on February 27 and 28 in order to help Japan to fight against the novel coronavirus, the Chinese Embassy in Japan said in a statement on Saturday.
Many Chinese provinces and cities, enterprises and individuals are also taking active actions to donate money and goods to Japan, the statement said.

China and Japan are friendly neighbors, and in the face of the epidemic, they are even more of a community of shared future. China will continue to provide assistance within its capacity according to Japan's needs and work with the Japanese people to tide over difficulties, according to the statement.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Saturday promised to take all measures necessary to curb the spreading of the novel coronavirus in the country in the coming two weeks.

At a press conference, he also reiterated that Japan will reinforce work to ensure a safe Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics this summer for athletes and spectators.
According to Abe, the government will create another emergency package totaling over 2.5 billion U.S. dollars from reserve funds in around 10 days to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.
"Japan will take all possible steps needed" to cope with the impact of the coronavirus, Abe told reporters, adding that he asked for support from the public for school closures to prevent group infections.
A total of 945 people have been confirmed infected in the country so far. 705 of them are from the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

I owe you an apology. I thought your pandemic phase 2 was a farce because of how well China had contained it and the level of global awareness there is to this virus but everything now highlights just how uniquely infectious COVID-19 is and what a difficult task it has been for the Chinese government to deal with it at the epicenter during the biggest holiday of the year.

It is ok.

We all groping in the dark, trying, or even thinking we felt a part of the elephant.
Having a Devil's Advocate is good to keep us humble and to be more accurate on our groping about.

We now seen how the numbers just exploded in Italy, in Korea to have an true inkling of how nightmarish it was in Wuhan and China. And amazingly, China actually got to grips with covid19 a lot lot better than I (and I guess most of you here) had expected.

Time for USA and the rest of Europe will be very soon on them.
I doubt they be up to the task, even with so much prior warning that China never did have.

I am even more pessimistic on Africa and South America. But by then, China will have fully controlled covid19 in China and will be able to give those areas a great helping hand.
