lol interesting if China ends up being the safest place and most prepared and supplies the world with masks and test kits n stuff.

I think that is probably what will happen.

No-one else is able to mobilise and gear up, as far as China can.

And if you try to move production outside of China, who is to say that those places won't become even worse off?

To be fair, the reaction of the Trump administration is much faster than the Obama administration during the 2009 H1N1 flu. However, considering the astronomical cost of the U.S. healthcare, where the medical bill for a flu patient could be thousands dollars, the consequence of a outbreak in the U.S. would be financially ruinous for quite a few people, especially for those who don't have adequate medical insurance. In China, the cost for treating COVID-19 patients is paid in full by the government as far as I know.

In Italy, there are now 400 confirmed cases and 12 deaths (3% mortality rate so far).

Meanwhile in Japan, some hospitals refuse to test patients.

It's two different situations. I've read of this virus since December. I don't know how earlier it was being reported. They said it started in Nov. Is that ample time to recognize a new virus responsibly? The US saw the coronavirus coming so they can take steps. When the 2009 swine flu emerged, it started in the US's own backyard and that was considered the last pandemic to occur in the world.

I'm not so optimistic. From the public health perspective, other places may be worse off than China. But companies don't care about public health. What they care is to keep the factory going and supply chain moving. Compare the Chinese approach to for example the Indonesian approach, which is to not test for the virus and pretend everything is fine. With the Indonesian approach, a lot of old people are going to die but factories can be kept open because young workers are less affected by COVID-19, and in any case, factory workers are replacable.

In this outbreak, governments must choose between public health and economy. China chose public health, I'm sure a lot of multinationals are not liking the choice.

This reminds me of this report:
