it is well established in the scientific literature that SARS-CoV-2 mutates at slower rates than the flu due to physical properties such as the presence of error correction proteins and the nature of their antigens, not because of some lack of vaccine pressure.

The average mutation rate of SARS-CoV-2 remains low and steady, and is much slower than other RNA viruses such as influenza viruses. Unlike coronaviruses, influenza viruses (which cause the flu) are prone to changes through processes called antigenic drift and antigenic shift.

Both viruses depend on a viral RNA polymerase to express their proteins, but only SARS-CoV-2 has a proofreading mechanism, which results in a low mutation rate compared to influenza.

The number of mutations depends not only on the individual mutation rate per virion, it also depends on total number of virions - the absolute case load. Thus by allowing COVID to run rampant, even the low mutation rate per virion becomes a high overall mutant appearance rate. It only takes 1 becoming more virulent to outcompete all other coronavirus variants and becoming dominant, as delta strain has proven.

Thus the only viable strategy is covid zero, and the Chinese government happens to agree.

This extremism ideology holds no water and cannot be reality. Every person on the planet is infected by coronavirus. To ensure covid zero means extermination of every man, woman, child on this planet.

From what I read in the Malaysian english language papers, they are still mostly presenting western points of view and parroting whatever the western media says. That influence comes probably from the long history of being colonised by the British and of the sons and daughters being sent to the west for higher education. No idea about the vernacular papers though, probably some of them are still inclined towards Taiwan.

Hopefully we can fully reopen (not that there was really a lockdown) by early September. We are a week away from 1 billion vaccinated citizens and gen 2 vaccine results will be coming in soon. We have baught the time that was needed.
