Merkel is opposing the IP waiver claiming that “The protection of intellectual property is a source of innovation and this has to remain so in the future.”. Looks like there'll be an impasse at WTO.

There's a reason Biden went ahead with this waiver. He knew that Germany would oppose it so this would never come to fruition. This way US takes the moral high ground while also satisfying its Pharma lobby.

US apparently decides to waive patents following the WTO meet

It looks more like a grandstanding than anything.
Here is a report from reuters.

And I quote part of it:

French President Emmanuel Macron said he was "very much in favour" of opening up intellectual property. However, a French government official said the lack of vaccines was the result of a lack of production capacity and ingredients, not of patents.

"I would remind you that it is the United States that has not exported a single dose to other countries, and is now talking about lifting the patents," the official said.

John Nkengasong, head of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, urged patience.

"The results will not be tomorrow," told a briefing. "What we need now, and urgently, is vaccines that we can put in the arms of people while developing our own manufacturing capacity."

As the head of African CDC says people in the under developed countries need vaccines in their arms right now, that is either local manufacturing capacity, or export from pharmaceutical powerhouses. Waiving the patent does not serve any of these purposes.

The French official pointed out the hypocrisy of Biden administration.

This is the typical US practice of "giving empty promise knowing it is BS". Remember US promising support to India and Japan's bid to UNSC membership? US knew very well it won't pass anybody else.

From Singapore: A cluster was formed by 40 medical staffs and patients infected with Indian Covid variant.
9 fully vaccinated staffs ( with Pfizer vaccine) only mild to no symptoms.
Of the remaining 31 cases, 7 required oxygen support and a 88 year old patient died.

Looks like vaccine might not prevent infection, but at least effective in preventing severe infection.
It is not "look like", it is always that way if you know how vaccine works. Vaccine can not block the virus to enter your body, face mask does that. Vaccine only provide more ammunition to the body to fight the virus.

The US decision on patent waivers I read was months away. How many Indians are going to die during the meantime? Biden is just punting the ball back further down the field. He has to make it look like he cares but doesn't want the heat when US companies lose money over his decisions. In a democracy that's what a President has to think about because profit is the most important factor in a capitalist society.
