Sinovac and Sinopharm have already submitted the paperwork for COVAX and looking to get approval in March. However, China has only pledged 10 millions doses for COVAX so I think it is just a gesture. Negative publicity over Chinese vaccines have been so widespread that I don't thin there is much to lose anymore. Most countries are so desperate for vaccines that they wouldn't take advice from the Western media. In addition, Western media has toned down the attack on Chinese Russian vaccines recently due to the fact that Western countries have been criticized for hording all the vaccines and leave the poor countries dry.

On the other hand, the application for review for EMA(EU) has not even started. Even though both German and France have hinted that they would welcome Russian and Chinese vaccines. So I think they do anticipate less resistance from COVAX than EMA by applying for COVAX but not EMA.

This is very worrisome.

TEL AVIV — Israel's Health Ministry says two more Israelis who had recently recovered from the coronavirus were reinfected by the variant first identified in South Africa, bringing the total of such cases to three.

The announcement Sunday came as Israel was finally beginning to see a drop in infection rates as a result of its nationwide vaccination drive.

The Health Ministry confirmed 14 more cases of the South African variant, bringing the total to 44, with 124 confirmed contacts and 36 infection chains. Health officials believe actual numbers are substantially higher.

In late January, a 57-year-old man from central Israel was found to have been reinfected with the

The Health Ministry said it was “making an effort to examine the extent of the outbreak” in Israel’s northern triangle region, made up of Arab towns and villages where the inoculation rollout has lagged behind the rest of the country due in part to mistrust in the central government.

The mutation has reached at least 32 countries, raising concerns as governments struggle to advance their vaccination campaigns.
Israel has vaccinated more than 3.9 million of its citizens, more than 40 percent of its population. Some 2.5 million have received the second dose.

Last month, Pfizer and BioNTech released lab test results that indicated their vaccine is effective against the N501Y mutation found in both the

and South African variants. Those results have not been peer-reviewed.

The companies said the preliminary findings “do not indicate the need for a new vaccine to address the emerging variants,” but they are “prepared to respond” with updates to their shot if necessary.

Another vaccine, developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, has proved to be only minimally effective in preventing mild and moderate forms of covid-19 caused by the South African variant.

Sharon Alroy-Preis, the head of the Israeli Health Ministry’s public health services, said much remains unknown about vaccine immunity and the emerging

variants, but the South African strain is believed to be more transmissible than others.

“We don’t have evidence yet that any of the variants are completely resistant to the vaccine, but there is some preliminary evidence to say that perhaps the effectiveness of the vaccine is somewhat less against the South African variant,” she told the public broadcaster Kan last month.

The variants have spurred concerns that vaccination campaigns might not be enough to stem future, potentially more severe waves of infection, and might further delay countries’ plans to lift restrictions on public life.

“to prevent the entry of the virus mutations and to ensure that we progress quickly with our vaccination campaign,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the time. He has since said that he will probably extend the closure past the current Feb. 20 end date, although Israel is expected to increase the quota of allowed incoming passengers to 2,000 a day.

As millions of Israelis get vaccinated and the number of new cases drops, the government is also planning to launch a “green certificate” program as early as next week to enable vaccine recipients to enter public spaces such as stadiums, concert halls, or performance venues.

Still, the government is mulling a fifth national lockdown ahead of the carnivallike Jewish holiday of Purim on Feb. 25, which was last year deemed to have been a superspreader event, particularly among

CNN Exclusive: WHO Wuhan mission finds possible signs of wider original outbreak in 2019

By Nick Paton Walsh, CNN

Updated 6:01 AM EST, Mon February 15, 2021

(CNN)Investigators from the World Health Organization (WHO) looking into the origins of coronavirus in China have discovered signs the outbreak was much wider in Wuhan in December 2019 than previously thought, and are urgently seeking access to hundreds of thousands of blood samples from the city that China has not so far let them examine.

The lead investigator for the WHO mission, Peter Ben Embarek, told CNN in a wide-ranging interview that the mission had found several signs of the more wide-ranging 2019 spread, including establishing for the first time there were over a dozen strains of the virus in Wuhan already in December. The team also had a chance to speak to the first patient Chinese officials said had been infected, an office worker in his 40s, with no travel history of note, reported infected on December 8.

The slow emergence of more detailed data gathered on the WHO's long-awaited trip into China may add to concerns voiced by other scientists studying the origins of the disease that it may have been spreading in China long before its first official emergence in mid-December.

Ben Embarek, who has just returned to Switzerland from Wuhan, told CNN: "The virus was circulating widely in Wuhan in December, which is a new finding."

Here's a great take from the GT. Apologise is the same as the others posted earlier. But this is more official, as it is from GT.

WHO experts slam NYT for twisting, misquoting their words on virus origins probe

By Liu Caiyu and Leng ShumeiPublished: Feb 14, 2021 01:36 PM

WHO experts who recently visited Wuhan slammed the New York Times for twisting their words and casting shadows over the efforts to uncover the origins of the virus, after the newspaper accused China of refusing to hand over sensitive data to WHO experts.

Chinese observers said they are not surprised by the New York Times’ baseless report given those in the Western media have insisted on politicizing the virus origins investigation.

The report by New York Times titled “On WHO Trip, China Refused to Hand Over Important Data” accuses China of failing to share important data that may help in identifying the origins of the virus and prevent future outbreaks.

After the report was published, two WHO experts slammed New York Times for misquoting them in the report to fit its own narrative, with the report casting a shadow over the scientific work of seeking for virus origin.

Peter Daszak, British zoologist and part of the WHO expert team, said on his personal Twitter that it’s shameful for New York Times to engage in selectively misquoting WHO experts to fit its own narrative.

The usual suspects here, the CNN and New York Times, are engaging in an absolutely relentless propaganda war against China, just like how they faked the news about the Iraq WMD. China honestly reported to the WHO investigation team that they traced back 147 more possible COVID-19 patients to December 2019. Guess what CNN did when they hear this? They said that there were a dozen variants and more than a thousand patients already in December. A dozen of variants? How could they possibly know? This is waving a tube of yellow cake! New York Times, on the other hand, insists that China did not fully disclose all the info. China already voluntarily disclosed the 147 cases back in December, what more the NY Times wants?

It's every man for himself now. Maybe a few months after developed countries have vaccinated majority of their population then equitable access might be possible.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Monday (Feb. 15) that the United Nations should convene an “urgent meeting” to deal with the problem of “hoarding” anti-COVID vaccine, claiming that the countries with laboratories that manufacture the several vaccines are doing so.

“It’s something that the UN should look at. It has to call an urgent meeting so that there’s no hoarding of vaccines because there are many countries that don’t have access to them, they don’t have any chance,” said the president, popularly known as AMLO, at his morning press conference at the National Palace.

In addition, he called for “mechanisms” to be implemented so that the Mexican resolution approved last year by the UN to promote equitable access to vaccines and medications during the coronavirus pandemic can be properly fulfilled.

After several weeks of seeing its vaccination plan stymied, México on Monday launched its program to vaccinate adults over age 60 in 333 municipalities in 32 states thanks to the arrival on Sunday of a shipment of 870,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from India.

AMLO admitted that it had “cost (the government) a lot” to secure the vaccine doses because “there’s a lot of demand, there’s little production and the governments that are producing the vaccines are holding on to them.”

“For example, all that Pfizer produces in the United States is for the United States. We receive the (doses) from Belgium, even when they’re manufactured in the United States,” he said.

He also said that “we had to speak” with the European Union because “they didn’t want (the vaccines) to leave Europe.”

In late January, because of the delays in shipments of the vaccines, the European Union established an application process for the export of pharmaceuticals, and on Feb. 9 guaranteed that it will authorize all shipments to México.

México, with its 126 million citizens, has requested 34.4 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine, 79.4 million of the AstraZeneca drug, 35 million of CanSino, 24 million of Russia’s Sputnik V, one million of China’s Sinovac and 51.1 million doses via the World Health Organization’s Covax platform.

But, after assorted delays, México so far has received only the 870,000 Pfizer doses and just 86,000 people have received the two injections needed to ensure maximum immunity.

López Obrador on Monday thanked the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for having authorized the shipment of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

“We made the request of them and they decided to send us the vaccine, for which we are grateful,” said AMLO, who emphasized the fact that India had shipped the vaccine even though it needs doses for its 1.3 billion people.

With 174,207 COVID-19 deaths so far, México is in third place worldwide in terms of its official pandemic death toll, behind the U.S. and Brazil.

Coronavirus: is China ready for the mRNA vaccine revolution?

Addressing the 4,000 people at the China Biological Products Annual Conference in Zhuhai in southern China, George Gao Fu said it was highly likely that mRNA vaccines would have the ultimate power to fight the coronavirus that causes Covid-19.

“The technology is fast, potent and induces longer immunity, from cellular to humoral immunity,” Gao said, referring to anitbody-mediated immunity.

“You are the heavyweights of the industry. I hope you will give thought tonight about whether your company should make a transition and whether you should start to make arrangements to work on mRNA vaccines.”

Xiang Zuoyun, chief strategy officer with Chinese vaccine developer Walvax Biotechnology, said this was the start of something new.

“[mRNA] is excellent technology for developing viral vaccines in the future and it is very likely that, in 20 or 30 years, all vaccines will use it. The trend is quite obvious,” Xiang said. “I feel we are witnessing the beginning of a new vaccine era.”

Comment: mRNA vaccines are more effective, and more easily adaptable towards new strains like B117 that will keep emerging. The US already has a head start and is beating the world at vaccination pace. Once the new variants like B117 become predominant, China's vaccines may not work anymore, whereas the US will have a vaccinated population and a more effective vaccines to offer the world, with better technology. At that time China will be in trouble. The US will say 'China caused the disease, we give you the cure (mRNA vaccine).

You like imagining bleak situations for China, eh? "If we flip 18 coins and they all land tails, China could be in big trouble!" LOL. In reality, China leads the world in vaccinations, especially of other countries because China itself has COVID under control. Chinese technology moves the fastest in the world; it has overcome so many overwhelming leads that America's "lead" in mRNA isn't enough to fill the gap between China's teeth. Gao Fu gives the speech today, USA surpassed next month. That's China's speed. America won't have a vaccinated population because half of it believes that COVID is a hoax created to destroy Donald Trump and to subjugate people into wearing masks as a sign of subservience LOL. And the US already says China caused the disease. The only people who believe it are the same people who would believe it if the US said that the Chinese are aliens here to take over the world; vaccines have nothing to do with it. The fact is that the US is losing credibility clashing with every major world organization with an ounce of integrity and that includes the WHO, which is quite upset at being misquoted and used for dirty politics.

The US messed up the pandemic under Trump but the reality is they are getting better. Their cases are falling. Their vaccination rate is the best in the world among large countries. And their technology is unsurpassed. Right now they are focusing on vaccinating their own people, but once that is complete, they will have an excellent infrastructure for export. They will use it against China if the mRNA vaccine has been tweaked to work with new variants successfully while China's vaccines become even less effective. China could even become dependent on the BioNTech vaccine licensed by Fosun and be forced to pay a lot of money just like they do now with semiconductors.

Some people think I discuss bleak situations for China because I am against China; this could not be further from the truth. Merely, I think it is more useful to discuss areas of potential weakness than strength. China has many strengths, and a strength is a strength; that is great, you accept it, and let it continue. But you focus on areas of weakness so you can improve. If my son brings home a B average report card, I don't say, "great you didn't get a C" I say "what can you change to get an A"? Given China's challenging international environment this is how it must think to survive.

This is the third time their cases have been falling. It's called waves.

Like I said, is it gonna be complete with half the population thinking that giving them a vaccine is planting a chip inside them? LOL America's COVID response is so bad that by the time the US is ready to export, the rest of the world won't need it anymore.
They will use it against China if the mRNA vaccine has been tweaked to work with new variants successfully while China's vaccines become even less effective. China meets threats faster than anyone else on the planet. If China needs to tweak its vaccines, it will do so itself. There is nothing in China's history that would suggest that China could become a laggard.

China's not only surviving but surging to the top of the world without your ill advice and defeatism so we'll pass on you again. Also, not interested in your made up bios. You already said you're troll on multiple forums calling yourself a "wumao" on others. You said that China should just roll over and give up for better relations with the US and whichever midget around it that senses opportunity. You said you've lived in the US for 30 years and swear you know that Americans are the nicest people who wouldn't want ill for China meaning it's somehow China's fault. You've propagated the BS about China's Xinjiang camps suggesting that China liberalize to try to curry favor with the US. You've even suggested COVID might have come from a Chinese lab. That's not even half of the completed list of items that you've said that no Chinese patriot would say. So please, not interested in your fake stories so don't try to soften me up with them. Just here to deal you maximum humiliation, whether you're Indian, Japanese, Falun Gong, Chinese on the wrong medication, or wannabe CIA. I don't care.

Walvax's own mRNA vaccine is in Phase II trial. So China is behind US and Germany, but the gap isn't that glaring. Also one of the main reasons for slow progress in Walvax's vaccine was, according to some supposed industry insiders on Zhihu, that the Chinese regulators weren't sure what to look for in a mRNA vaccine candidate, so the approval for human trial was delayed. Those issues could be overcame with more experience.

If China is to learn something from this, the lesson should be that more investment in life sciences is crucial. The U.S. is spending half of its basic research on life sciences, and mRNA vaccine went from science projects to real world application astonishingly quick. China must listen less to people like particle physicist Wang Yifang who opposes to more life sciences funding because Chinese life sciences rely on American scientific instruments and China shouldn't spend its foreign currency reserve (as if what holds China back is that it doesn't have enough U.S. dollars). Wang of course wants China to spend 100+ billion yuan on his Circular Electron Positron Collider which has zero potential application.

I'd be very happy if COVID could lead to the establishment of a Chinese version of NIH.
