Re: Computer Talk!!

I'm thinking of getting a Sony laptop, Made in Japan....and alot of people say the build is better and even though its expensive its long lasting and good looking.
.
Overall not good value though,. One of my boys has got top range mac laptop. and he runs both operating systems on it.HE reckons in the end you cant beat the Mac Op system and they are very well made.

Ive been all so slowly going of Sony and favouring Samsung for my electronics, and made in China stuff as a spare. OUR PS3 which was one of the early ones has broken the second time. THe funny thing is it doest get very much use.. The laser reader went after about six months and 100hrs of use, this time we would be lucky to have clocked 20hrs on it since it was replaced, and when he went on line to update whatever it is you update, the laser wouldn't readso we dunno whether it was the software update or the laser.
Anyone had that problem? He said he was gonna fix it himself as his fiend sent one in and it cost $300 for ths same prob.

Re: Computer Talk!!

According to Digital Daily, Microsoft appears to be earning the dubious distinction of 2009's top company of patent infringement as well as 2009's top company of losing such suits.

--- Lost $388 million to Singapore's Unilok for security technology patents.
--- Lost $200 million to Toronto based i4i
I was having a quick glance at an article about patents but I forgot where, so I dont know whether it was an online mag article or something you had posted earlier.

But this is how I understand the gist of it, sometimes companies can file a patent for what ever in their country, and then sue for infringement when a product that contains those design characteristics is introduced into the country.

Sounds terribly confusing but the article was about the increasing level of Chinese patents.Theres a special name for that type of patent filing and the writer says its fairly common.

So perhaps Microsoft is being hit by these type of infringement claims.
Must be the way patent filing laws and their requirement works. Just beat them to the punch in your own country.

Re: Computer Talk!!

Several of my friends have PS3 they haven't had any problems so far.

My son THINKS that maybe the later model of PS3 are more reliable because they have dual lasers while the early models only had one.

Hes not sure its just an opinion.

Re: Computer Talk!!

Isn't it covered under warranty? They should have the same amount of lasers, I remember that the only changes to the PS3 was the amount of hard drive space.

His first one was actually replaced under warranty, what we don't know whether its a new one or a repaired one of what think is of similar age. I know Gateway used to replace monitors in that fashion.
He said he was fairly sure he read that the early Ps3 had a single laser, and the later ones had two. He assumed in that case one to read blue ray and the other to read red.

Re: Computer Talk!!

Heres a story that can give you laugh through the tears. 3yrs ago one of my sons- who was studying Mechatronics (A engineering field constructed a home built computer for me.. But something went wrong as we turned it on, a power surge killed the power unit and must have done something else to the motherboard as it would'nt power up even after putting in a new GOOD QUALITY POWER UNIT and after trying several other loaned brand name units, still no dice.

AS a last resort we chucked this no name made in China power unit from A Indian computer parts supply chappie, real cheap about $30 but the catch was it only had a 6month warranty.but it worked yippee but sure enough the power unit cut out in 3-4 months took it back , was given another one , it worked for about the same length of time and cra...... out again.

When I went back he said he wasn't selling them anymore too many complaints about them cheap Chinese junk yadad yada yada. Any way he had 5 left in stock which I took off his hands for $80. Anyway as of last week Im down to my last three, OMG what am i gonna do when I cut those out...... yeah yeah I know shoud have got another mother board at the start, but after spending about $300 on it at the time I wasn’t exactly in the mood.

To this day its still a strange problem because it will power up if one turns it on from the computer on switch but once it has been unplugged from the wall, theres a fifty fifty chance of it playing up before powering up.

I assume "power unit" = "Power Supply" ?

I've never heard of motherboards killing power supply units, but not impossible I suppose. If your power supply unit is dying after few months use, you might want to invest in a good UPS with auto voltage regular:

I've built my own computers since 1989 and, you do get what you paid for. i.e. ECS make cheap motherboards with cheap components. I had one where the CPU fan bracket broke and caused system shutdown from CPU overheating. The fan bracket was pretty flimsy and I had to order a better quality replacement. If you compare the ECS CPU fan bracket to the ones used by better Asus MB's, the quality difference is obvious to the eye.

You may also want to consider buying brand name computers with good warranty. Both Dell and Apple offers 3 year warranties. I own an Apple Macbook (the $999 white one) and run both OSX and XP on it via VMWare. Some people don't like Apple computers for its price and "snob" factor. Personally... it's just another OS like Windows and Linux. As long as it gets the job done, it's good. Plus I like RapidWeaver:

Apple just refreshed the cheapest MacBook with faster (2.13 Ghz) CPU and memory (800). If anyone is interested in buying one, I recommend getting the base configuration with AppleCare package, then upgrade the memory to 4 GBs and HDD to 500 GBs yourself. It's easy to do and all you need is a small screwdriver. Apple has made it very easy for user-upgrades.

Then buy a $20 VGA or DVI dongle and hook it up to your big external display. :)
