COMAC has begun the preliminary design of C929 and the process of selecting suppliers.
About damn time. They will have to decide if they will go for an all metal aircraft, or one with composites.
Hopefully at least the wing will be composite.

C929 would be on the same level as B787 at 50% composite. Note, contrary to C919 having a secondary alternative design (more composite), C929 has only one (composite) design from the conception.

They’ve been working on a composite fuselage for almost 5 years now.

SAIC(Shanghai Aviation Industry group) official Weibo account announced. ''composite wing development capacity building project'' will be completed as early as this year. they literally mentioned C929.

Huanyu is the supplier of C929 wing wall panel forming. they have mentioned in their annual report.

looks like COMAC is planning to use domestically produce composite wing in C929 despite the fact Russia is the main supplier of composite wing in C929 as per the agreement..

China is determined to have domestic alternatives in every major technology and capacity regardless foreign country being friendly or not. So Russia can remain the main supplier of C929 wings but China would build alternative capacity at smaller size.

This is a key difference between China and US. China will never hand over its industrial competence to anyone else, while US does so to "allies/slaves" hoping to control them forever. China doesn't believe in that idea.

Wasn't the C929's detailed design completed earlier this year?

in November, 2023 deputy General manager of COMAC Qi Xuefeng confirmed.

China's first wide body aircraft C929 entered in detailed design..

so take this new information just casual coz Chinese journalists have habit to repeat same old information again and again.

If they do both cfrp wing and mostly corp fuselage, then they will be a lot more than 50% cfrp. They would be using more composite than 787.

in comparison, c919 is not using enough.

The cost of carbon fiber has come down so much and capacity has gone up so much that there is no reason for them to source composite wing from Russia anymore. Especially now that this is no longer a joint project.
