Anyone has access to Aviation Week?

Apparently 300 C919 are coming in next 7 years going by this article, based on negotiations with Honeywell.

I thought I read earlier in this thread someone mentioned that by end of next year, every major system on the C919 apart from the engines will be indigenized? Is this not true? I would have thought given the current state of things, it would be maxium priority for Comac to localize as much as possible as soon as possible.

Most components with exception of the engines and nacelle are made in China in joint partnerships between Western and Chinese companies in China. We do not have enough information with regards to how much import substitution there is in the component production but it should be improving.

1. Honeywell and General Electrics have joint venture with Chinese firms to produce parts in mainland..

2. Landing Gear system produced in Changsha city under Joint venture between Germany's Liebherr and AVIC.. initially all parts came from Germany and Austria now all material and components produced by local Chinese firms and send it to Changsha city to assemble.

3. even for Nacelle, Safran has Joint venture with AVIC to formed a joint venture, Xi'an SAVI Nacelles Co., Ltd. so LEAP engine nacelle do assemble in Xian .. but how much percentage of parts currently supply by local firms.. this is what i don't know. but i m trying to get information..

4. all high end machine tools, assembling software , high end materials have been localized already..

do you see, majority of parts currently producing in mainland through Joint venture and local Chinese firms continue to eliminate foreign suppliers in core components..
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

last year in October, a high level meeting was held between COMAC/AECC and local government.. big decisions have been taken.

The first C919 aircraft of China Southern Airlines arrives at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province, Aug. 29, 2024. China Southern Airlines announced on Thursday that it expects its first C919 passenger aircraft to enter commercial service by mid-September. China Southern's first C919 features a three-class layout with 164 seats, including 8 in business, 18 in premium economy, and 138 in economy.

The airline will deploy the C919 aircraft it receives this year at the Guangzhou airport, with flights covering destinations including Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Xi'an.

In April, China Southern signed a deal to buy 100 C919 aircraft from the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC). The deliveries are scheduled to last till 2031.

China Southern and Air China on Wednesday received their first C919 aircraft in Shanghai, marking a pivotal moment as the country's first domestically produced large passenger aircraft enters a new phase of multi-operator deployment.

To date, COMAC has delivered nine C919 aircraft, all to three leading Chinese airlines. China Eastern Airlines, the launch customer for the C919, has reported consistent operational performance since its entry into service 15 months ago, covering five regular routes with over 3,600 commercial flights.

For COMAC to satisfy just the domestic market in the next 20 years, it needs to build 450 aircraft per year. It is hoping to reach 150 C919s annually in 2028. Obviously, a lot of that demand will be filled by Airbus (many from Tianjin.)

But it is really a reflection of this market. COMAC doesn't have to export one plane to be successful. In fact, it doesn't need to take over the whole domestic market (and probably can't in next two decades) to be successful.

But like in autos, once China captures a large percentage (I say around 33-40%) of the domestic market its aircraft will be massively competitive in exports too because of economy of scale and world-class competition -- from the Tianjin Airbus plant -- just like domestic cars were honed by competition from JVs:
