Actually, I find it very disappointing. Which part of the ARJ21 was actually designed in China? :(

The plane is designed in China. Having suppliers all around the world is very common. All the modern airliners are like that.

I was referring to design, less so supplies. Companies such as Airbus and Boeing design their own fuselages and wings. On the ARJ21, the fuselage comes from the MD-90, while the wings come from Antonov. With avionics and engines coming from American companies, it begs the question: what exactly has CACC done?

they got assistant on the wings, the fuselage is not exactly the same. They have to design the plane in a way that has the best fuel economy for the designed market. I don't see what's the problem with getting avionics/engine suppliers around the world and asking others for assistant. Even Sukhoi is getting design help from Boeing and have all Western suppliers.

.... Companies such as Airbus and Boeing design their own fuselages and wings. .....

Companies like Boeing & Airbus have access to all kinds of collaborations & techs around the world with most western developed economies including Japan etc from design to manufacturing. Quite simplistic to just say they 'design their own fuselages and wings'.

China completes aircraft makers' merger: report

SHANGHAI, Nov 10 (AFP) Nov 10, 2008

China has merged two major state aircraft makers as it consolidates its aerospace industry in the hope of creating a global player, state media reported on Monday.

The new company, China Aviation Industry Corp, was created by the merger of China Aviation Industry Corp. I, or AVIC I, and AVIC II, the Shanghai Securities News reported, citing company officials.

Company officials contacted by AFP would not immediately comment on the report.

The long-anticipated merger was announced in June and officially completed on Saturday, the report said.

The newly combined company hopes to see annual sales growth of 22.3 percent and annual sales of one trillion yuan (146.5 billion dollars) by 2017, the report said, citing the firm's deputy general manager Tan Ruisong.

The company has total assets of about 290 billion yuan and annual sales of about 150 billion yuan, Tan was quoted as saying.

The company, which controls 21 listed firms and has 10 business units including defence, transport planes, helicopters and engines, also aims to list its entire assets within the next five years.

China has said it aims to build large aircrafts such as passenger jets with more than 150 seats, fanning expectations that it could eventually compete against Boeing and Airbus.

The new company also holds a stake in Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, which was established in May to build jumbo jets and has developed the country's first home-made regional aircraft, the ARJ21.

Xi'an Aircraft Industry (Group) Company under Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) signed a contract with Asian Spirit Airlines of the Philippines to purchase six Xinzhou Modern Ark MA-60 airplanes in Manila, capital of the Philippines, on May 30.

Up till then, Asian Spirit Airlines had ordered a total of 11 MA-60 planes, which is another major breakthrough AVIC has made in exporting its aviation products while overcoming the financial crisis.

So far, the Chinese company has received a total of 162 orders for its MA-60 regional jets with self-owned intellectual property rights from home and abroad.

Of them, 92 orders have been officially placed and the remaining 70 are on orders of intention.

More than 30 aircraft have already been delivered, including 20 planes operating in foreign countries such as the Philippines, Laos, Zimbabwe and Indonesia.

In addition, 12 orders for MA-600 planes have been placed, bringing the total number of orders for MA series to 174.
Interesting development, looks like MA-60 just keeps scoring export deals. For a plane that's so unimpressive, this does require a lot of sales pitch. btw, I think the importance here is that these export deals gives AVIC-1 experience in after sales support + business contacts for future (more advanced) airliners like ARJ-21, MA-700 and C-919.

HANGHAI, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Ltd. (COMAC) unveiled its manufacturing and assembling center here Saturday, the latest step towards the goal to manufacture China's homegrown large aircraft.

The Final Assembly Center of the COMAC was based on the Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Co., with a registered capital of two billion yuan (292.7 million U.S. dollars), said COMAC's general manager Jin Zhuanglong.

It was one of the COMAC's three key entities which were responsible for aircraft design, manufacturing and service.

Jin said the Final Assembly Center's new base in Shanghai's Pudong area will be constructed within this year.

By 2010, the center will be able to produce 30 ARJ21-700 model planes a year, and the capacity will be expanded to 50 jets by 2012, Jin said.

The ARJ21, an acronym for "Advanced Regional Jet for the 21st Century," is the first regional jet that China has fully developed independently, in accordance with the standards set by General Administration of Civil Aviation of China (GACAC), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA).

The Shanghai-headquartered COMAC has launched its design and research center, based on the Shanghai Aircraft Design and Research Institute, and a customer service center.

The latter provides aircraft maintenance and repair, pilot training, aviation equipment and materials leasing and consulting for aviation technologies for both large planes and regional aircraft.
I guess all part of the plan, they are building the final assembly in Shanghai. I think for the military transports, they are still getting assembled in Shaanxi.
