Ahh, nice to see them finally flying at this half of Earth. If quick enough, then my tenant might be able to find a job at the airport.

Two brand new MA-60 regional jets have been delivered to Bolivia.

The 50-seat turboprops were produced by China Aviation Industry Corp I. And their sale to Bolivia marks the first entry of Chinese-made aircraft into the South American market. T

here are already 116 standing orders for the MA-60, with 86 of these coming from overseas clients. Deliveries so far have been to Zimbabwe, Laos, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
I'm surprised at the 86 export orders though, didn't think they had that many.

I saw on Chinese BBS's that the ARJ-21 has been delayed for 6 months because imported parts delivery was delayed.

Does anybody know if this is true and why are there imported parts for an aircraft that is supposed to be domestic?

The ARJ is using Rockwell Collins avionics, GE engines, and a host of other imported equipment. It's not a totally indigenous aircraft.

This is certainly a better strategy from a marketing point of view - all the more so in relation to the export market.

I read that the delay was in the avionics. It seems like delays are now quite common in commercial aviations.

June 5 (Bloomberg) -- China Aviation Industry Corp. I has
taken firm orders for 30 of its MA60 turboprop this year as
airlines seek more efficient planes to help cope with rising fuel
prices, the South China Morning Post said, citing the company.
The MA60 order backlog will increase to 158 units from 128
this year, with an additional 40 purchase options, the Hong Kong-
based newspaper reported.
AVIC I, as the planemaker is known, has taken new orders
this year from China, the Philippines, and African countries
including Tanzania, the newspaper said.
The 60-seat turboprop uses 10 to 20 percent less fuel than
turbojet engines, the Post said, citing Zhang Guangjian, a vice
president of China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corp.
Jet fuel prices have risen 72 percent in the past year.
I'm actually not even sure where it's getting the orders from. The Phillipines order was previous uknown to me, but it does seem like this not so advanced jet is doing better than most people had guessed.

And look, it might even get orders from India.

stanbul, June 9 (PTI) In its bid to make a foray into the Indian aviation market, the Chinese aviation authority is in talks with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for type-certification of their turbo-prop aircraft so that they could be sold to interested Indian parties.

Talks between the Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC) and the DGCA on type-certification of this aircraft "are in progress," Zhang Guangjian, Vice-President of China Aviation Industry Corporation I (AVIC I), told PTI here.

He said a DGCA delegation would visit China in the coming months to study the aircraft's technical and other capabilities.

Zhang, who was here to attend the annual summit of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), said "we have made presentations on the turbo-prop MA-60 aircraft before some Indian carriers and most of them have evinced keen interest because of its good performance and bringing good profits to the airlines." However, he refused to name any airline or company in India which had shown interest in acquiring these planes.

The Indian market "needs a very large number of turbo-prop aircraft to meet its regional air traffic needs. The MA-60 will meet the Indian market demands as the Indian route structure is generally of the same range as in China," Zhang said.

The MA-60, which can seat 52 to 60 passengers and is powered by twin turbo-prop engines made by Pratt&Whitney, is in global competition with the French ATRs, Russian Sukhoi SuperJets, Japanese Mitsubishi Slivers and similar aircraft produced by Bombardier and Embraer companies. PTI

XI'AN, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The first China-made regional aircraft Modem Ark (MA) 600 was completed on Sunday, marking a milestone in China's drive to be one of the world's leading providers of turboprop regional aircraft.

The research and development of the 70-seat MA700 was also underway, head of the preparation group for the China Aviation Industry Group Corporation Lin Zuomin announced at the Xi'an Aircraft Industry (Group) Company Ltd.

The 60-seat MA600, an improved version of the MA60, was 300 kilograms lighter, making it 40 percent more fuel efficient than turbofan-powered aircraft, said president of the Xi'an company Meng Xiangkai.

Improvements were also made in the power system, cabin design and flight capacities.

After five years, China would be able to deliver its own turbo-prop regional jet series of the MA60, MA600, MA700 catered to different users, said Lin.

The country would strive for a bigger market share comparable to its rivals, Canada's Bombardier and France's ATR. he said.

The MA600 was scheduled to make its maiden flight in September, and early promotion activities had attracted interest from many carriers. The main marketing drive would begin next year 2009.

Beijing Youth Daily has reported that 10 to 15 MA600s would be manufactured in the next two years. Up to 30 a year could be made according to market demand. Mass production would start in late 2009.

Company officials could give no information on the cost of the aircraft.

The China Aerospace Industry Research Center forecast 5,300 to 5,500 regional aircraft would be needed in the next 20 years, of which 1,900 would be turboprop aircraft.

Turbo propeller regional aircraft are commonly used on short and medium range flights.

Nearly half of the regional jets flying in Europe and North America are turbo-propelled. The demand for the relatively environment-friendly aircraft is expected to rise with global oil prices.

Regional aircraft account for just 12 percent of China's aircraft, and many large jets are flying regional routes, causing a waste of resources.

Experts say turbo propelled regional aircraft are the most economical and energy-efficient on short and medium range flights, laying the market foundation for the MA series.

Chen Fusheng, an official with the China Aviation Industry Corporation I (AVIC I) told Xinhua the MA700 would be aimed at markets in developed countries.

It would be designed to meet demand for the next 20 years, Chen said.

Powered by the Pratt and Whitney PW-127J turboprop engines, MA60 is China's first regional plane designed and produced in line with international standards.

The MA60, with a maximum speed of 514 km/h and a range of 2,450km or four hours, was first tested in 1993 and approved in June 2000 for commuter services as its primary role.

It has received 122 orders, of which 15 have been delivered to Africa, with Zimbabwe and Zambia among the buyers.

The ARJ21 Xiang Feng, in which AVIC I holds all the intellectual property rights, is set to debut in September.

CHina still needs to develope its civilian plane engine and flight control technology. I believe the MA60, MA600 still using Pratt and Whitney engines and honeywell flight control systems.

Its big step, but do note that the buyer is very likely to be GE, which plans to use the aircraft like their corporate aircraft. There is some self interest here since GE is also supplying the engines.

China will sell 25 jets to a US company in a "breakthrough" deal that marks the country's entry into the big-plane market dominated by European and US players.

The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (CACC), which developed the ARJ21-700 regional aircraft independently, will sign a 5-billion-yuan ($735 million) contract on Tuesday, the Guangzhou Daily said Thursday.

The deal, to be inked on the opening day of the 7th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition in Zhuhai, Guangdong province, proves China's homemade aircraft have won international recognition, experts said Thursday.

The ARJ21, an acronym for Advanced Regional Jet for the 21st Century, is China's first homemade regional jet.

Asian buyers have showed interest in ARJ21 jets, with Lao Airlines having signed a letter of intent to buy two, CACC said in May.

But "it is very difficult to enter North America and Europe," Chen Fusheng said over the phone. Chen is in charge of marketing another homemade turboprop aircraft, MA600.

"Their (US and Europe's) markets are mature, and aircraft makers have to pass time-consuming and high-standard tests before selling their planes," he said.

The deal shows global buyers have confidence in ARJ21, Chen Jin, a CACC marketing manager, was quoted by Guangzhou Daily as having said.

The ARJ21 can carry 70 to 110 passengers, and rolled out of a Shanghai factory in December last year. It has yet to take its maiden commercial flight and get a certificate from the US-based Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Under the circumstances, signing of the contract shows the buyers are confident of Chinese planes' performance, Chen Fusheng said.

The ARJ21-700 has a maximum range of 2,000 nautical miles, and is scheduled to take its first commercial flight by the end of November, Xinhua said.
