I think they forked over some money in support of the development of the game too. Much better investment for soft power than anything else attempted so far.

I had a feeling this game would be really good when they got approval to use the Opening and Ending theme music from 1986 version of Journey to the West. That show is considered one of the all time greatest treasure from CCTV and they won't give out those rights to just anybody.
People should journey to India

Gamescience : You're diverse, huh?

DEI censors : Yeah, diverse.

Gamescience : Ya know, I read a lot. Especially about things... about biology. I find that shit fascinating. Here's a fact I don't know whether you know or not. Blacks were spawned by monkeys.

DEI : Come again?

Gamescience : It's a fact. Yeah. You see, uh, monkeys have, uh, black blood pumpin' through their hearts. Hey, no, if eh, if eh, if you don't believe me, uh, you can look it up. Hundreds and hundreds of years ago, uh, you see, uh, monkeys, like Wukong, started walking upright in Africa.

DEI : Yes...

Gamescience : So you see, way back then, uh, monkeys were like, uh, normal savannah animals. But, uh, well, then they did so much inbreeding, and uh, well, they changed the whole species. They did so much evolving, huh? That they changed the whole bloodline forever. That's why walking on all fours became walk on hind legs. You know, it's absolutely amazing to me to think that to this day, hundreds of years before, that, uh, that Wukong still carried that Black Myth gene. Now this...

Gamescience : No, I'm, no, I'm quoting... Biology. It's written. It's a fact, it's written.

DEI : [laughs nervously] I don't like this guy.

Game science : Wukong's descendants are black. Uh-huh.

Game science : Hey. Yeah. And, and his great-great-great-great grandmother was an African, ho, ho, yeah, and she had a full African kid... now, if that's a fact, tell me, am I lying? 'Cause my game, my game is part... Diverse

kinda metal that these are also real life deities in Chinese culture, not saying such deities haven’t been part of gaming before like Guan Yu in Dynasty Warriors or Three Kingdoms, but given the magnitude of this AAA game, it’s reversed. Imagine if you were playing Skyrim and there are real countries and cultures in the modern world that worship Aedra and Daedra, like there are temples to Nocturnal or Talos or Meridia.

It's because these deities arise organically everywhere in China and you have people like Wu Chengen go around and collect them and fit them all into his story in a "cinematic universe" type way.

Fun fact: Nezha's home town is today's Tianjing and there's even a temple dedicated to him in Tianjing.
