Tencent did it again and people on reddit are already up in arms lmao.

Light of Motiram

The art direction is obviously inspired by the Horizon series, but truth be told, I'm actually more interested in this than the Horizon series.

It's free to play and is coming to PC / PS5 / Android / IOS. No release date for now.
China amusing itself by putting all it's B teams into making games that are literally the same as western AAA but with smoother gameplay and hot characters:

uuhm the trailer looks more interesting than what online discourse has been "lulz lulz horizon rip off", it feels like this could be a pal world like success.
I mean well yeah, that's usually how it goes with anything Tencent, Netease, or anything Chinese made in general. I know a lot of people who hate on them (mostly for Sinophobic reasons) for "copying" or taking others art direction but truth be told, they usually are quite successful because the whole principle comes down to the Chinese developers playing these games and believes they can go and make a better one.

I mean just look at what we make and compare it to the Western counterparts they took inspiration from.

You got duet night abyss vs Warframe
You got Marvel Rivals vs Overwatch 2
You got all these Chinese historical games vs Sekiro / Ghost of Tsushima
Genshin Impact vs Zelda games
Delta Force vs Call of Duty / Battlefield
Arena Breakout vs Escape from Tarkov

It would not surprise me one bit if all these become more successful or to the same success as their inspiration.

This one will probably piss Sony off because they got the Horizon development team making a Horizon free-to-play MMO right now and it seems the Chinese beat them to the punch. It stings even more since it actually looks fun and different enough from the Horizon series.

Ex-Blizzard president goes sour grapes over the tremendous Marvel Heroes Rivals launch and criticized Black Widow for copying Overwatch's Widowmaker.

Copying whom? Black Widow first appeared in publication in Marvel Comics in the 1960s. More like Blizzard copying Marvel.

Black Widow herself may have been inspired by Diana Rigg's character Emma Peel in the British TV spy show, The Avengers. Right down to the red hair and the tight dark suits. Come to think of it, with the title of the show, there's a certain irony to this.

Bonus:

Emma Peel in The Avengers.

Wow, game's off to a very good start.

Considering that Marvel Rivals is made by Netease and reviews so far have said the monetization is actually really generous, it bodes well for Ananta and other future Netease productions since the company had a reputation for being predatory.

Really for Chinese studios that make live service games, MiHoYo was a giant adrenaline shot that forced them to adopt similar business practices of easing monetization and having high production values in order to be competitive, when before they were comfortable pushing low quality content with high monetization since there was simply no other competition in the Chinese market.
