UbiSoft, like GM, might not be at the cutting edge but they are still both major Western firms in their respective industries. In fact, they represent state of the Western industry more than the new cutting edge companies like FromSoft.

So what is the forefront or cutting edge in AAA right now? FromSoft in AAA? Is Elden Ring something that Game Science can't match or do better?

Or is FromSoftmore like Tesla which is better than GM, Ford, Stellantis and the rest of the Western industry's current rank and file but still needs tariffs to be protected from BYD and the other Chinese firms?

Valve? Counter Strike and DOTA (which basically is an offshoot of WarCraft) don't seem very advanced to me. I don't think Chinese firms are far behind or behind at all to even the best Western firms in AAA.

My point is Wukong and the AAA games coming up (Phantom Blade Zero, Where Winds Meet, etc.) show that the Chinese industry can match up technically with the West on their initial tries. UbiSoft is a good benchmark for AAA. You do need money to be a standard.
In the West? Rockstar Games (Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption), Larian Studios (Baldur's Gate 3), and CD Projekt Red (Witcher 3, Cyberpunk) are probably at the top of the list for AAA developers. They consistently produce critically acclaimed and commercially successful games. Technically Valve also fits the bill but they're not in the business of developing much AAA any more.

Below them are companies like EA, Activision-Blizzard, Ubisoft, etc. that are commercially successful but also widely criticized.

I think Game Science is close to the top Western developers, but they need more consistency than one release. Mihoyo, by contrast, pretty much dominates Western mobile developers.

Good post.

But I like to add that "first one" from a rookie firm in any premium market is usually several rungs off the market standard. The first Toyota and Hyundai in the US car market failed abysmally. It is later iterations that brought them up to standard.

Game Science is at AAA industry standards first venture! One would assume that it can only get better from here.

And it is not just a critical success but a commercial one too. It is already closing in on Elden Ring and Cyberpunk at 25M in sales after just a few weeks.

China entering AAA is unlike any other rookie. For most countries, I would think it'll be like India's initial entry into major gaming:

Which I think is actually a pretty credible effort for a first-timer. China's gaming industry entering AAA is a very different beast from anyone else.

This is a result of the success of Black Myth Wukong where they're talking about having Game Science do versions of "Black Myth" for other cultures. That's a double-edge sword though because they'll blame Game Science also for any offense seen. If you take a look at all the heat "woke" consultants and journalists for attacking Black Myth Wukong, it's not coming from the Chinese. China just saying, "No!" to bowing down to them isn't a crime. But they'll blame all the heat the "woke" are getting from everyone else on the Chinese. By their logic if the Chinese just submitted to their extortion, none of this would be happening. It's the "if everyone just did what Hitler wanted without resisting, there would be peace" logic.

Ubisoft failing for Star Wars... How about Black Myth Jedi? I already saw some mods where they had Wukong with a double lightsaber.

Just imagine that one if Disney isn't worried about the fake controversy. That's why Game science should sue Sweet Baby Inc, and IGN just to kill them off.

I've been looking for something like this for a while. This is all the stories from Wukong chapter 1 journal entries in audiobook form. Great for if you want to learn and improve your 白话文.

I really dig that story about the wolf swordsmen where he tell the other wolfs they need to stop giving trash loot the Black Bear for brownie points because he doesn't care about such things. Then when Black bear was holding a zen ceremony to talk about resurrection and immortality he was the first one to stand up and say yes it's working and he can feel something, before others followed suit. Then right next day he got promoted upwards by the Black bear.

Now that's 人情世故. That's how you kiss up to your boss.

If you cross reference this with the entry for Black Bear you will see after he returned from Guanyin's service he realised he's been away for so long that he needs to regain the respect of all the yaoguai on his mountain, and just martial powress is not sufficient. Hence why he rebuilt the temple and started resurrecting people to show leadership and assert his new Buddhist credentials.
