Neither are dinosaurs, if you want to get the facts right.

All pterodactyls and pterosaurs were technically flying reptiles I believe.
I knew reading all those dinosaur books when I was five years old would come in handy! :D

I remember there was indeed some "flying reptiles" were considered dinosaurs, but both the Chinese or English name kills me - they having a bigger head than pterodactyls, living mainly at seashore cliffs, gliding down to hunt over surface of sea...

Anyone can give a clue? Anyway, OT.

Edit: (To save space while OT)

Interesting reading, but I think I am not refering this "new" discovery. I remember it being a bigger pterosaurs, but not THAT big, and when I read it (<10 years old) the book dose indeed claim it being dinosaurs instead of archosaurs.

And it is really triggering my interest that "The flying dinosaurs are actually the birds". - Although most writing Biological stuff is in latin letters, China, have her own set of scientific Biological system. i.e. We differenciate 翼龙 kind of "reptiles that can fly (gliding)" and what I was refering "dinosaurs that can fly (gliding)" very well

- And dinosaurs in general were just one chunk (byplot) of acient reptiles, they extincted; while the living OTHER reptiles evolve into birds, mammals, and modern reptiles. - If by mentioning Darwin's evolution theory didn't offend anyone here.

So in my little universe, birds have no bloodline with dinosaurs at all, and birds & mammals, are siblings (Same ancestor different direction of evolve), instead of "mammal is superior than birds"

It's really good for off topic sharing.

Edit 2:

Sorry pal, you're a bit behind the times :p.

The dinosaur-bird hypothesis became increasingly irrefutable when they found more and more feathered dinosaurs. The first one came from liaoning, actually. Also, of all the archosauria therapods share the most morphology with birds. The evidence is staggering

OK, I am having a loosing battle here it appears.

How you define dinosaur at first place? Dinosaur, despite all the latin letters I don't read, is one branch of reptiles. I do know the "feathered reptiles" discovery in China, it even been mentiond in Chinese textbooks. But unlike the scientist who having romantic feeling with dinosaurs (there were many documented wrong-classification incidents in history), those discovery is more a proof reptiles envolve into birds than dinosaur "itself" envolve into birds.

Reptiles is a general idea, from the dinosaurs, the crocodilians, the pterodactyls, ... various forms that dominated such long earth's history, some extincted, some didn't and envolved to either total new direction (ie, birds, mammals), or new forms of reptiles (modern reptiles)

The "archosauria therapods share the most morphology with birds" dose testify birds envolves from reptiles as a general idea, but it is too romantic to think dinosaur this narrow branch of reptiles envolves exactly into birds. They don't say "dinosaurs have extincted" for nothing.

But anyway, like Bltizo mentioned at #361, we all got the idea of 翼龙 nevertheless.

Azhdarchids!

But you meant Pteranodon didn't you?

And they weren't dinosaurs. They were archosaurs, and the closest relative to dinosaurs in the archosauria family group.

The flying dinosaurs are actually the birds XD

The birds developed from within a group of dinosaurs called theropods around 150 million years ago.
The archosauria include the dinosaurs, the crocodilians, the pterodactyls and by rights also the birds.

Has anyone heard of any programmes where UCAVs are intended to be used as SEAD (and less so, DEAD) assets?

I am not talking about suicide drones like the Harpy, but fully recoverable UCAVs. They seem like the perfect platform for such missions, with extremely long loiter times, would be a lot cheaper than manned assets currently used both to buy and operate, and if you do loose a few, its no big deal.

The only downside is their relatively slow speed and limited payload, but speed is not really and issue if you can afford enough UCAVs to make sure there are some on station at all times, and payload be be easily increased from existing loads if necessary, just look at how the Predator has evolved.

Given all the advantages of UCAVs in SEAD, why does it seem there are no SEAD UCAV programmes?

^ I think ucavs like X-47B, taranis, neuron etc can all be configured for the DEAD role. All that is necessary is to hold a few guided A2G weapons and ISR support.
Even Reaper, with it's relatively small RCS and a few hellfires or paveways could work against less advanced air defences.

The capability to reliably perform sead will be more down to linking the uavs together and giving greater autonomy imho.

Right. It was just figuratively speaking.

According to wikipedia, Pterodactyloidea (Pterodactyl) is just one of the many families of the the Pterosauria Order (Pterosaur) of flying reptiles. Interesting.

Here is the Chinese article on this development. It does talk about this is first time PLAN using a communication UAV to provide long range communication relay in battlefield. It relays the battlefield imaging/info amidst ECM effort from enemy cutting out wireless signals.
