They can just leave a open hole in there can they?
Or is it an exhaust port for something?

I saw this too and my first impression was, there is someone mixing an image of an early F/A-18 Hornet - all details are exactly like a Hornet, even the AIM-7 Sparrow AAMs - with a news report ??
