Well, the thing is the CJ-7 was supposed to use the same old radial engine as in the CJ-6A, and the TA-20 was supposed to use a Ukrainian 450hp turboprop engine. The first one probably does not have enough improved performance to matter, and the second one uses an unreliable engine supplier. But I am sure they will figure this out eventually.

The Russians have much the same issue with engines for the Yak-152. They are working simultaneously on an aviation piston engine developed from a car engine called APD-800, and on the VK-650 turboprop.

I am fairly sure that with all Chinese development of drones some viable engine will show up eventually.

edit button doesnt work anymore. I guess my question is also if PLA is actually doing that, just getting new units and replacing the first delivered ones?
Don't know, they have made a lot of them actually, a bit more than 10 000 I think. CJ-6G model for general aviation and crop spraying uses was still produced on the 2010s.

I've already read that the JL-9G has a landing hook. But I can't see it on any photos.
Does it actually have any ?
Apart from that, will the JL-9G ever be used from an aircraft carrier ? (Fuijan ?)
Because it seems to me that it's not used from Liaoning and Shandong.

If I recall correctly, that JL trainer with a tail hook was likely a technology demonstrator that was abandoned. They replaced the tail hook with a electronic device which might be the one shown in the first picture of your post. I don't believe there will be any trainer like the JL-9G for carrier use.
