Re: JL-15 and other trainers

This is actually kind of interesting, because it looks like the military cooperation between China and Ukraine is shifting the other way. The article:

Ukraine is interested in stepping up its cooperation with China, particularly in the military-technical area, Ukrainian Defense Minister Yuriy Yekhanurov said.

"Cooperation between our countries in the military-technical and military areas, which have previously been ignored by us, will from now on become a reality," the minister was quoted as saying after his five-days visit to China, in a press release issue by the Defense Ministry on Monday.

Yekhanurov particularly stressed the fruitful cooperation between Ukrainian aircraft makers and China. He is convinced that this area is one of the priorities in the bilateral cooperation, according to the press release, a copy of which was obtained by Interfax-AVN.

The minister emphasized the efficient work of Motor Sich and the Antonov Aviation Research and Technical Complex. "There is a question of governmental support to the Antonov Complex and other our aircraft making companies," he said.

There has been a long need for the joint bilateral production of the new L-15 plane, he said.

Currently, the Ukrainian Ministry is working on a program to create a corvette, Yekhanurov said when asked about the purpose of his visit to the Chinese naval base in Shanghai.

"We are now looking at whatever the world has best and rational to offer and with a good price/quality ratio. This is what this part of our program was focused on," the minister said.

Cooperation between Ukraine and China involving Russian companies would be particularly interesting and promising, Yekhanurov said.

"I think that time has come for the three of us to negotiate and agree upon joint projects. I am talking about military-transport aircraft, training naval aviation officers, and ship building. I think that this subject of cooperation will have a future. I would very much like to see this met with understanding among our Russian colleagues," the minister said.

As for developing the military-technical cooperation between the two countries in light of Ukraine's plans to join NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), this seems to be acceptable for our Chinese colleagues, he said.

"We are interested in developing good relations with all countries, primarily, with our neighbors. But in today's global world it is difficult to say who is your close neighbor and who is the distant one. We are all close," the minister said.
Of course, L-15 uses Ukrainian engine, but it would still be quite a change for Ukraine to buy from China. And the part about Ukrainians looking for corvette solution in China is also interesting, because it indicates that China is planning something like that (again, I'm still looking for this class of ship). The other parts about transport and naval aviation training, we already know.

Perhaps the Russian-Chinese rapprochement in military-export has the Ukrainians worried they are missing out on the pie.

A smart move on the part of the Ukraine, Hongdu has nothing to lose to work with the likes of Ivchenko Progress and it would be mutual beneficial. This could strengthen the L-15s chances of both domestic and international sales at it provides a key 'first buyer' for the L-15 which would prove the viability of the L-15 to both foriegn and possibly sceptical PLAAF officials.

well, news about Venezuela's K-8 order, they are all going to be delivered next year. Interesting part is that Venezuela appears to also purchase different radar from China.

Venezuela to receive Chinese K-8 aircraft in 2010
From August to September 2009, the planes will be tried by Venezuelan pilots in China and then will be disassembled and sent to Venezuela

A lot of six planes, model K-8, out of the 18 aircrafts purchased by the Venezuelan government from China will arrive in January 2010 to be used in counter-narcotics efforts, reported on Wednesday a high-ranking military officer.

"In January 2010, we will have the first six in Venezuela and before mid 2010, the 18 planes will be flying in the Venezuelan air space," said General Jesús González, the official responsible for the Operational Strategic Command, AFP quoted.

According to the officer, from August to September 2009, the planes will be tried by Venezuelan pilots in China and then will be disassembled and sent to Venezuela.

As part of counter-narcotics efforts, Venezuela also bought 11 Chinese radars which will start operations next March.

González said that the government will continue his plans to procure new armaments and military equipments, regardless of the world financial crisis.

"The military ambit will possibly suffer some changes, but definitely, it seems unviable that the development plans we have in the National Bolivarian Armed Forces will be modified, because it is a need and it is of the essence," he said.

Does anybody know what sort of radar they ordered? From the sounds of it it seems to be a Chinese radar?

Ohhh, from the way the article is written, it makes it sound like the K-8s would carry an onboard combat radar.

yeah JYL-1 is definitely part of the equation, but I thought you guys only got 3 of them, so there are 8 more. Maybe, some low altitude ones also, since JYL-1 is a long range radar.
