Does anybody know anything about the CJ-6A basic trainer aircraft? These have been flying since the 1960s and I am wondering how long they can practically remain operational and what could China replace them with? Thanks!

They did try to replace it with the proposed CJ7 aka L-7 which made its maiden flight in 2014, but in the end they still preferred CJ-6 instead.

I don't know the real reason but I speculate it may be CJ6's safety record plus easy maintenance and economic to operate.

With an updated glass cockpit it should still be viable as a primary trainer for a few more years

During a discussion on defense procurement in the Uruguayan Parliament last Thursday, defence minister Javier Garcia was looking at a document with lots of L-15 images....complete with Uruguayan markings photoshopped onto it. Certainly proof that it remains a serious contender for the new combat aircraft selection.
