Re: Chinese sub thread

This may have been covered before but I have had little luck in finding any information if so. I know that China as well as many other countries use variants of French sonar suites on their submarines. Doe anyone have accurate information on how good these systems are (say on the Song and Yuan)? Are they entirely French in design or modified systems? I'd like to know what the Song and Yuan have for sonar suites. I know they both have bow mounted active/passive and passive flank arrays. What are the 3 sonar transducers or hydrophones on the bow of the Song? Finally, most of the literature I have seen also says China does not yet operate a towed array system. Curious to me since the Chinese most certainly have the technical know how.

Cheers

On the latest issue of Chinese navy magazine, pretty sure it's 093. It is refered as "new nuclear sub".

Hm....at first I thought it was a Han class submarine but then I could see some differens. First of all the sail looks bigger and doesnt have the same sloping shape, and then the water intake (or whatever its called) dont look the same as on the Han class. But then again, it doesnt look anything like the first pic of type-093 from a couple of weeks ago.

Well a few things. The "tower" is called the sail. The holes along the side of the casing are called "limber holes" and their purpose is to allow venting of air from the MBTs (Main Ballast Tanks). This could possibly be the new nuke boat, but looks suspiciously like a Song with Photoshop mods. I tend to think it's just a Song made to look like a different boat. The length looks too short to be a nuke boat of Chinese origin.

402 is the 2nd hull number of 091, 20 years in service already.

The 3 models shown on the Chinese magazine page are 091, 091 mod, 093, from the top.

Re: Chinese sub thread

I have heard that nuclear submarines are no quieter than diesel submarines in shallow waters. Why is this?

So are diesel submarine operationally hampered if they need to operate in blue waters?

yes to an extent u r right, but with new fuel-cell technology coming in, diesel subs will be even quieter than the nuclear subs.

A nuclear sub needs to keep its compressor and pumps running in order to cool down the reactor. A diesel electric sub does not; if it needs to go completely silent, every moving part can be shut down and the sub can make like a hole in the water. Also, the size difference between nuclear and diesel electric subs makes a difference; one will be more easily picked up via MAD, and will have a larger acoustic signature.

^ So a diesel sub with AIP, that's not moving or moving very slowly, is equally silent in shallow coastal water as in blue water?

Its definitely longer than a Song. The nose of the Song is squared while this is sharpened, and has the definite double hull appearance, while the Song is single hulled. Also the Song lacks the white markers on the side of the sub, which may indicate warnings for tugboats not to touch these areas as they may contain flank sonar arrays. And nuclear subs tend to have taller vertical rudders, which is true on this ship as it is taller than a Song's.
