The "Kursk" were an Oscar-II indeed.
However, I'm pretty sure the Typhoons are the only subs with a swimming pool onboard.
I may be wrong, though.

He's a surface sonar tech. Not a submariner. He is right now an instructor of advanced sonar technology at the ASW base in San Diego. Humm.. He's getting info but sure as hell ain't passin' it on to Big Daddy! Why?:( I'm sure it's classified!!!. Last time I asked him he said he did not know what I was talking about then started laughing and said "I don't know..really".

The USN is not putting anything out about excersises except "happy news". The real "meat" of these excersises is classified. That's why I asked Mazepa to post what is being said in the Swedish press...

This morning there was an article in Swedish press relating to the exercise this autum with the Gotland Class SSN. It reports that HMS Gotland was able to approach close to the Carrier Ronald Reagan and photograph it during the exercise and indirectly scoring hits..

Re: Chinese sub thread

On a side note, the latest JDW article stated that Song and Ming are both up for export. I guess this means Yuan is going really well? I mean China do not normally offer their latest platform up for sale.

fair use

JANE'S DEFENCE WEEKLY - JANUARY 11, 2006
Ming- and Song-class SSKs offered on world market

ROBERT KARNIOL JDW Asia-Pacific Editor
Bangkok

* China looks to be unwrapping portions of its highly secretive submarine development programmes

* Beijing is not known to have ever previously exported submarines

China appears to be offering conventional submarines for the export market, with promotional brochures featuring the Ming-class (Type 035) and newer Song-class (Type 039) diesel-electric patrol submarines (SSKs) displayed at a recent defence exhibition.

The brochures were shown at the China Shipbuilding Trading Co stand a defence exhibition held in Bangkok in late 2005.

China is not known to have so far sold any submarines to foreign forces.

The Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is thought to have 20 Ming-class SSKs currently operational. The first of class was completed in 1971 and the programme restarted with a modified design in 1987. The most recent boat, hull number 313, was launched in April 2002 and it is not known if further construction is planned.

The basic technical data provided in the China Shipbuilding brochure largely mirror design details that have been long known: displacement of 1,584 tons surfaced and 2,113 tons submerged; two diesel engines producing a maximum speed of 15 kt surfaced and 18 kt submerged; diving depth of 300 m; and range of 8,000 n miles at 8 kt snorting. The brochure states that the boat is 76 m long and 7.6 m in diameter, with a complement of 55. The Ming has been commonly thought to have dimensions of 76 x 7.6 x 5.1 m and a complement of 57.

The brochure further notes that the Ming is fitted with eight 533 mm torpedo tubes, with six forward and two aft. It has an 'attack' radar and four types of sonar: integrated; noise ranging; reconnaissance; and communication. Perhaps most notably, several images of the interior are shown.

The Song, with the first of class launched for sea trials in 1995 and later versions significantly modified, is outlined in even less detail. The PLAN is thought to have at least eight Song SSKs currently operational, with one or two more being built.Dimensions have been commonly thought to be 74.9 x 8.4 x 5.3 m, with a displacement of 1,700 tons surfaced and 2,250 tons submerged.

However, the brochure says that the Song measures 76.4 x 7.8 x 8.2 m with a surfaced displacement of 1,992 tons. It gives the maximum height as 14.6 m and the average draft as 5.4 m. Operating radius is 3,000 n miles and the maximum diving depth is 300 m.

No further information is provided, and neither boat is identified by type. Both are, instead, simply labelled as "conventional submarines".

Re: Chinese sub thread

Im not surpirsed that the Ming is up for sale. even if it were up for sale 20 years ago, no one would buy it. too old.

The song? i think this means that china is willing to sell to friends like pakistan(most likely first customer, as the song is very much liek pakistans agosta 90bs. or turkey. i doubt the submarine would be offered to everyone, especially those china does not get along with

That's interesting, I remember reading a JDW article from 2005 that said Pakistan is looking to purchase 3 new submarines from either the French or the Chinese. However, Agosta 90B is more advanced than Song in terms of noise level and control system, so the Pakistanis might be waiting for Yuan when it becomes available.

The Song might be cheaper, and that might be what pakistan is looking for. It might also come as part of a larger deal for warships.

Re: Chinese sub thread

R-class means romeo? I know some romeos were sold to egypt, but im not sure of north korea. Romeo really shouldnt count as a true chinese export, as it is a soviet designed submarine.

Ming is up for sell? That's weird, that'll buy it? The thing is a piece of ......... It might be quiet as a SS, but it is noisy for a SSK. And it is rather old and slow..... and avonics?
