Since you asked earlier about Gotland training, I saw this today:
Looks like the USN is making alot of headway in diesel sub tracking tactics and also working in conjunction with them as supporting assets. And your son would know better than me regarding submarine tracking....I wasn't a sonar man. But I do remember people working sonar that they were running real-time diesel tracks.
@Migleader - You're right. The SSBN's don't have a glorious mission, but they are not built to do what you suggest. SSGN's are. The whole purpose of an SSBN is to hide, evade if necessary, avoid confrontation, and be ready to launch at moments notice.
