I personally think that China's soft power has suffered precisely by doing what @name has suggested. That is, trying to do what they think the rest of the world likes. Take Chinese restaurants for example, they think Westerners would like to easily find out what's on the menu, so they rename 饺子 into "dumplings" or 拉面 into "pulled noodles". Japanese restaurants just name them "Gyoza" and "Ramen".
My experiences have been more similar to @manqiangrexue and @Bellum_Romanum's. Attractiveness whether it's to women or to society at large come from a foundation that's truly universal: money, power, brains, and brawns. If you have all that, then the only way you can eff things up is by trying too hard to guess what others want and be a people pleaser.

Soft power or entertainment power? Entertainers invariably have to people please because that is literally their business model. Western, Japanese, and South Korean entertainers also adapt their content for foreign audiences. You think the sort of blatant racism we saw in old Hollywood movies would've allowed it to become globally attractive? The US very much reinvented its own image during the Cold War as a "multi-cultural egalitarian society" so that it could gain followers in the Global South that were all going over to the Soviet Union because the latter wasn't as racist.
