Will this ship have a similar status to civilian transport vessels in USN service, or will she be used in a merchant fleet and only be taken into PLAN service in time of need or for exercises?

Man this ships amazing, this is what exactly what China needs

It also has a massive sea lift capacity, anyone know if it can take a helo? Personally I think it's a game changer in terms of its transport capabilitys

CDF has actually posted quite a few entries on RoRo ships before, although this might be the largest to date. Here is one.

Although, I personally haven't followed this that much, so I'm sure others can add to me.

All those large RORO ferries entered service in recent years are just regular vehicle ferries travelling between Qingdao and Dalian, but they have all been speced by PLAN so they can be easily converted for military use. They are by no means like US Military Sea Lift Command's dedicated transports.

This ship is the largest but no the first, there are a dozen similar sized ships already in service around China for years.
Here is the helipad.

anyone have any details on this ship? its called the Cocso "Spirit" from the defence blog, is this just another container ship? its looks striking like the LHD but it is very high and tall? i know theres no Chinese LHD, but if i didnt i would be seeing this picture and saying for sure that it is a LHD

i think its clear that PLAN amphibious ships are for the Chinese marines which would be spearheading a landing and these roll and roll off ships are for PLA personal and their equipment

its clear that PLA transport is for high numbers and equipment whereas Chinese marines will be more like elite special forces, nevertheless these new roll on and roll off ships are very nice!"

That's the first of two 5000 unit car carrier built by COSCO shipbuilding for COSCO, they are both delivered by 2011 and are used to deliver cars made in China.

The problem with using civilian ro-ro ships to transport troops and vehicles is reliability. What if a conflict rapidly unfolds but all the civilian ships you want to use for transporation are halfway around the world at the time doing their usual civilian things?

Well this is why you have ships like the Algol class in the military sealift command, Algol class is a formidable transport, US has 8 of them and a single Algol could probably equip entire division, it's absolutely massive just check pictures of it, it has 4 cranes

But China has made good progress here with ro-ro ships especially the larger 36,000 ton ship, by the looks of it they have quite a few of these ships and some are used near Chinas coast so they won't be far if needed
