Chinese semiconductor thread II

Unfortunately it won’t be that straightforward. Existing mobile GPU designs including HUAWEI’s differ significantly from standalone designs. Just take a look at the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite chips. Top tier GPUs on mobile but horrible performance for standalone PC. It is going to be extremely difficult for any vendor no matter how well resourced to break into the standalone space, including for HUAWEI.
Also for anyone interested ARM published a manga comic detailing some of the differences at a high level for developers. Standalone GPUs and mobile ones have significant architectural differences that aren’t going to be easily overcome by anyone anytime soon.

Huawei's Maleeon GPU is unlike any GPU design.

Didn't say it was straightforward, but I also think more highly of Huawei than Qualcomm.

Yeah unfortunately AMD and Nvidia have almost a 30 year head-start on this with deep industry integrations everywhere including in gaming, 3D rendering, and CAD. The level of vendor lock in China is gonna have to deal with for GPUs is pretty insane. I think a domestic GPU ecosystem will eventually be built but I think we’re looking at possibly 15+ years for the whole ecosystem to reach maturity.
15 years is way too pessimistic. It’ll be faster by a lot, because you don’t have to redo the whole optimization stack from scratch. It’s not like you have to start with 15 year old code. You can probably get 80-90% of the way there on your first or second pass. Closing the last 10-20% may take a few years, since part of the optimization process also requires GPU architecture changes, but that’s maybe a 3-5 product cycles not 15 lol.

It will be annulled if US makes an attempt to move against international GPU makers. Same with semiconductor toolmakers as well.

If from tomorrow ASML states it will not operate anymore in China, then China will just force their existing operations to sell to a local guy, like what Russia did with all the random western companies after Ukraine. The Sino-ASML wouldn't have the latest EUV equipment that's in the Netherlands only, but it would have the full IP rights to all the ex-ASML machines in China. They'd have the market rights to sell maintenence/refurbishment. And even make new machines under their own IP once they've sorted out the transition.

It's the issue of convincing video game teams to adopt your cards and optimize your driver. This is the reason AMD and Intel fail. AMD is extremely reliant on PS5. It's standalone gpu buisness is extremely small. Making drivers is a long task. Like a decade or more long task.

Pioneer Semiconductor LiDAR Project Lands in Tianqu New District

According to Qilu.com, on August 31, the provincial on-site promotion meeting for major high-quality development projects in the fall of 2024 was held, with a branch venue set up in Dezhou. At the meeting, it was announced that the semiconductor laser radar and sensor device industrialization project with a total investment of 5 billion yuan had started. After the completion of this project, it will not only break the monopoly of foreign technology and achieve independent control of core chip technology, but also promote Dezhou to form a full industrial chain ecosystem, enter the first echelon of the domestic integrated circuit industry, and build a first-tier city in the national semiconductor industry.

The semiconductor laser radar and sensor device industrialization project is located east of Chongde Eighth Avenue and south of Shangde Fifth Road in Tianqu New District. It mainly builds 10 production lines for gallium arsenide substrate epitaxial production, device module manufacturing and packaging testing. "We can produce more than 10 products such as laser radar, inertial navigation, radio frequency sensors, laser transmitting and receiving devices, 3D modules, etc. After full completion and production, it is expected to produce about 1 million laser radars annually." said Jin Weizhao, the project leader.
