They may hope so, but extremely unlikely as Chinese and Korean and somewhat Japanese will have that advanced node chip manufacturing facilities, just a matter of time

Also they are already way more advanced than EU, even Chinese is .. and can produce more cheaply
I think the EU will have to bear the cost and make the Foundries for whatever high the cost. This matter is now clearly a geopolitical and national security issue (thanks Trump..) and Not an economic issue.

So even if they need to subsidise these foundries then they would still be committed to constructing them

It depend on how fast they can reach the 2nm target; if they can arrive there within 5 to 10 years then their immediate competitors perhaps will still be TSMC and Samsung. Their experience maybe is equal or behind China now, but they dont have trouble in getting EUV Lithography, EDA, and any other most advanced tools.

Don't you think the US might block it ? .. it is not impossible once the US see the EU as a competitor ?

Like we discussed in this thread, ASML EUV uses a CYMER light source, US could just block export on nat sec reasons. As far as I know there isn't a EU replacement. The only other source is Japan if I'm not mistaken question is will the Americans allow the Japanese to export to the EU.

Can't really think of a EU company that really needs 2nm and one that is also big enough to fill capacity So the fab could make a profit and invest in newer generations of fabrication technology. Given the same export embargos this new EU based Fab will most likely not be allowed to deal with Huawei.

Yeahhh, National security reason could be anything and it could happen to the EU or anybody

Sounds like fake news. No resources were quoted in the article. TSMC's yearly revenue is 47 billion. Only 15 billion of this is profits. How can a company with 15 billion profits be going to finance 100 billion investment in 3 years?
Agree, it sounds fishy. Besides, TSMC has already said that with the expansion of fabs in US & EU, there is going to be an over supply problem. But it's only a problem for TSMC as every major player will be striving for self sufficiency in they chip supply chains. Once TSMC fab in US is up and running with Green card holders or transfer of tech completed, nothing going to prevent US from applying its National security act on TSMC. China remains a bright spot for TSMC but window of opportunity is closing fast.

Wasn't it posted here recently that they tried to convince a European company to become a high tech end semi conductor fabricator but the European company said something akin like we will not do it there's no market for it. Given that there are no European brands that need sub 10nm chips any time soon, we here in Europe don't have a Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, Google, Amazon or a Microsoft.

Europe does not have similar companies because it allows US companies to acquire and dismantle their EU competition thus nipping it in the bud. Nokia, Skype, MySQL, are just a few of the examples. ARM is likely the next in the list.

Why would Chinese fabless semiconductor designer choose a European fab over a domestic fab? Knowing European nations they are always late at finishing their big projects.

FT Article: EU cash alone won’t secure chip supply for region, says Infineon chief
Not exactly sure how to cleanly quote FT articles here, so i just took the relevant part.
@BlackWindMnt that what I'm saying if the sanction is still place on the Chinese company who gonna buy them? Apple? TSMC had that customer in their pocket for compensating the lost of HW revenue. What I'm seeing is that EU will be a third bloc and become what Xi called a Strategic Independence entity. There is grumbling inside Germany and the northern state industrialist about the US unitary and discriminatory use of sanction especially on them. Let see if the unelected EU bureaucrats will act favorably, they are more concern about ideology rather than economics.
