Sadly it will be FAB by TSMC, @WTAN @foofy and @Oldschool , can they FAB this using SMIC N+1?

Chinese search giant Baidu's AI chip unit Kunlun has completed a new round of financing, the company told CnTechPost on Monday.
Baidu did not provide further details, saying only that:
Thanks for your attention, Baidu's Kunlun chip business has recently completed independent financing. More information will be announced in the future.

reported the financing earlier, citing people familiar with the matter as saying Kunlun was valued at $2 billion.
The fundraising is led by Chinese private equity firm CITIC Private Equity Funds Management (CPE), with IDG Capital, Legend Capital, and an industry fund Oriza Hua participating, the report said.
“Kunlun chip business has recently completed a round of financing. We will release more information in due course,” Reuters said citing a Baidu statement.

Last month, Baidu said its in-house developed 7nm AI chip Kunlun 2 is about to be mass-produced to further enhance the arithmetic advantages of its AI cloud.
Kunlun 2's performance is said to be three times better than its predecessor, and Baidu said it will be deployed in areas including search, industrial internet, and intelligent transportation.
Announced in 2018, "Baidu Kunlun" is China's first cloud-based full-featured AI chip developed by Baidu.
Kunlun 1 had been mass-produced more than 20,000 pieces and had achieved application deployment as of the middle of December 2020.
Baidu has been No. 1 in China for three consecutive years in terms of AI patent applications and licenses. Baidu AI open platform brings together 2.65 million developers, making it China's leading AI mass production platform with integrated hardware and software.

Lmao I don't know if I am the only one but every time I hear about Huawei 7 NM, Baidu 7 NM or any other company's advance chip design I cringe inside.
I understand the importance of it but IC equipment is everything, I dont even care a lot about fabs like TSMC so for IC design I have the lowest opinion of it. Just trash..

These companies, better to cough up a billion each and donate them to research institutions for IC equipment

@voyager1 same feeling bro, we had achieved success in designing a competitive Chip but is lacking in manufacturing it, It was intensively debated last year in this forum, letting out all those frustration and emotion. The good thing is they're not asleep and silently working hard to address those issue, we will see progress this year and hopefully the 7nm mass production next year.

Based on the recent Liang Hui, was semiconductor equipment (e.g. EUV) elevated to 'Manhattan Project' level of urgency/priority, or was that more low-key and indirect mention of it's importance?

To me, it's exciting to see the Chinese Academy of Sciences (just sounds so bad ass, like the country's mighty scientists coming together) and tons of resources. It's just a matter of time, not IF. US really fucked up by awakening the Dragon.

Baidu already signed up partnership with Samsung on this 7 nm AI project

If they don't join and pitch in money for Chinese indegenious equipment association aka China EUV alliance
Then those design by Alibaba and Baidu are prestigious projects to show them they are high-tech, therefore increase their valuations in stocks. Because the central government calling for self suffiency in chips they are big companies they have to show something..half hearted

SMIC barred by US for technologies 10nm and below. They are some materials and equipment they can't buy. Domestic vendors not ready yet at 7nm

I think I missed something. Could someone explain what a 7 nm AI project is and why it's important?

@Oldschool so you think they can't wait for SMIC domestic 7nm line? that may take at least 2 years?

This is probably like all those other AI chips... An inference and/or training accelerator. There are dozens of companies working on this sort of crap in China. Everyone is doing something like this. Even the coin miner ASIC guys like Bitmain. Eventually there will be a massive consolidation among all these competing designs.

I wish there were more people doing things that matter like CPUs and GPUs. At least there are a couple of them. Even memory needs more manufacturers. Is anyone working on things like MRAM in China? That would be nice.
