Lee Kuan Yew once said, "China can draw on the talents of 1.3 billion people. The U.S. can draw on the talents of 7 billion people."

The U.S. openness to immigration of STEM Ph.D's and diverse society is its strength.
Doesn't matter when the 1.3 billion has more STEM talent than the rest of the 7 billion. China only needs to worry about how to retain and optimally utilize that talent.

As soon as smee 28nm duv comes out, ASML should b banned in China if it not willing to sell NXT200i. It serves no purpose.

China has 4 years to completely be independent at certain node,28nm before potential next GOP president winning in 2024. Cotton already proposed the encore, stronger version than trump, complete decoupling from China.
No semiconductor chips and equipment to any Chinese entities. It won't just limited to above 10nm for SMIC as of now.
the next GOP president will adopt complete decoupling.

Clock is ticking. Stockpile as many second handed equipments as possible.
Not just cellphone chips, alot of other chips won't be available in future.

It really depends on how much equipment that SMEE or other domestic manufacturers have the capacity to pump out. Just because they can build something doesn't mean that they are able to meet domestic demand. China should wean itself off ASML and TSMC but do it gradually until it is certain because disrupting the supply chain without an alternative ready is stupid.

Canon, Nikon have similar. Banning threat may required to make asml cough up nxt200i which doesn't have US components. It doesn't supply China because it's playing game.

Does anyone have any ideia of this means? The US, the EU and japan will jointly develop tech? The US companies have a clear advantage in most areas (just look at semiconductor production). Will the US companies have to share their tech development with companies from the other countries? What if these other nations also cooperate with china? Will china be barred from cooperating with US/EU/japan companies?

A Huawei earbud is dissembled and found out besides a Kirin chips it's using US company TI, IDT, ADI
Battery charging and wireless charging chips and audio DSP chip. All those are legacy , old but still essential. This kind of chips 0.18um or 90nm is sufficient.

Under Cotton proposal this is will be No go under GOP presidency term

Unfortunately analog and mixed signal chips take a lot of experiences to design and manufacture. It’s these instead of digital chips that present the biggest challenge.

Most Chinese companies don't pay attention to those chips because they are low valued. Few dollars each. Instead they targeting high value digital soc chip.
Huawei hisilicon found 30 years ago. They chose not to touch those low valued chips. 30 yes is pretty of time to hone their skills if they chose to.

When sanctions hit they are all essential.
