At this point, I am not sure there are that much technology exports from the US to Huawei and SMIC. Maybe, SMIC still imports some US material and technology but SMIC probably has anticipated a total cutoff.

Too late domestic substitute are already being used this year and Huawei won't take such action without consulting SMIC. ;)

(1) Process equipment business: Zhiwei Technology, a subsidiary of the company, is one of the main suppliers of domestic wet process equipment. At present, wet process equipment has been fully covered at the 28nm node, and all process machines have orders. At more advanced process nodes, Zhiwei has obtained some craft orders. Single-chip sulfuric acid equipment is the most difficult process machine among wet process equipment. Zhiwei S300 SPM machine has been delivered to many domestic mainstream fabs, and has been applied to the 12-inch logic mass production line of domestic head customers, with the highest monthly production capacity Up to 60,000 pieces or more. In 2023H1, the cumulative output of a single device on the user's mass production line has exceeded 200,000 pieces, which is an important milestone for domestically produced high-end wet process equipment to replace imported ones. At present, Zhiwei is the only domestic manufacturer of single-chip sulfuric acid equipment that has reached the above-mentioned single-machine mass production target. The company's wet process equipment is applied to the mature process product line to expand in an orderly manner, and the penetration rate of the production line of some logic users and third-generation semiconductor users continues to increase. Applied to high-end product lines with advanced processes, the progress of order acquisition is delayed due to the impact of user expansion progress, but for high-temperature sulfuric acid, FIN ETCH, monolithic phosphoric acid and other machines that are still monopolized by international manufacturers, the company delivers and verifies The progress is leading in the country. (2) High-purity process system integration business: The high-purity process system integration business mainly supporting equipment still maintained good growth, and orders reached a new high. The company has become the largest supplier of high-purity process system support equipment in China, effectively replacing and changing the supply pattern originally monopolized by foreign gas companies. The company's system integration and support equipment has a solid domestic leading position, and its core customers are all front-line users in the industry, such as SMIC, Huahong, Huali, Huawei, Yangtze Memory, Hefei Changxin, Silan Micro, etc.

  The second phase of Qidong base, Haining base and Japanese factory were successfully opened, and the increase in production capacity helped the development of the main business. The 30,000-square-meter P1 plant of the second phase of Qidong Equipment Manufacturing Base was delivered and put into use, and the production line was successfully constructed and has been officially put into operation; About 5,000 square meters of office and factory buildings have been delivered and moved in, and officially opened, providing a foundation for further development of overseas markets. In 2023H1, the company has built a production and service base of 340,000 square meters, and another 100,000 square meters under construction will be delivered within this year, which can effectively support the company's development under the framework of "ten-year vision-five-year plan-three-year path-annual goal" Short-, medium-, and long-term strategic goals. The company's product line layout and production capacity construction have been able to support the annual delivery of tens of billions of orders, laying the foundation for the company to achieve its 3-5 year business strategic goals.

  Accelerate the deployment of electronic materials and core components business, and continue to strengthen the local supply chain construction of process equipment. In terms of electronic materials and core components: (1) The bulk gas business has steadily contributed revenue to the company. The first domestically-made 12-inch wafer advanced process bulk gas supply factory invested, designed and constructed by the company has fully met the indicators. The continuous and stable gas supply has reached 1.5 years, successfully breaking the original monopoly of advanced process bulk gas by international suppliers, and achieving zero breakthroughs in domestic independent bulk gas stations. (2) The business volume of Hefei wafer recycling and cavity parts recycling has begun to climb steadily. In the second half of the year, it is expected to enter the break-even period and gradually enter the profit contribution period. In terms of user introduction, the strategy has been adjusted smoothly and the business is climbing in an orderly manner. (3) TGM/TCM on-site services have been carried out in an orderly manner, and some cavity components have begun to be verified, all of which are imported by long-term users based on trust needs, and the deployment of electronic materials has also begun. In terms of supply chain construction: the company will deploy manpower and material resources to strengthen the construction of the local supply chain of process equipment from 2021 to ensure business continuity and improve the delivery cycle. In 2023H1, the construction of the local supply chain of process equipment has achieved further results. The company has achieved the stage goals of cultivating the local upstream supply chain through a series of measures such as order traction and cooperative development.

Meanwhile in the RISC-V world... It might take many more years to get to the performance of a modern x86, but i think it is pretty exciting that they have gotten a usable linux desktop up. The past couple months have been the first time I have seen basic items like a workable web browser , video, sound etc working on these publicly or soon to be available hobbyist RISC-V boards.

This one is using a alibaba t-head 1520 c910x4 at 12nm. I believe it will run in the 300$ usd range. Too bad not on a Chinese branded linux (likely too much bloat ) but debian is baseline of many linux flavors.

Following the teardowns, two relevant points were raised:
  • Both manufacturers use local players for low-tech elements (mechanical parts, fuses, relays, inductors and film capacitors). Yole SystemPlus assumes that the connectors, PCBs and some film capacitors provided by TE Connectivity, TT Electronics or TDK are also manufactured in China. However, the high-tech components (MCU, ICs, Si/SiC discrete devices and electrolytic capacitors) are imported, showing a still strong dependence on European, American and Japanese semiconductor players. For the two systems, the share of components and parts produced outside China is estimated at 40% of the total material cost.

  • Some SiC chips are integrated. After inverters, the use of SiC is increasingly observed in less powerful electrification systems.

With the xEV market targeted for a bright future, it is not surprising that some Chinese companies (BYD, HDSC and Starpower for instance) get involved in SiC MOSFET development to steer away from the grip of foreign players in this domain.

Another problem for Qualcomm is their monopoly on mobile 5G modems is broken. And it is broken hard. Their position was protected by a wall of patents even Intel and Apple couldn't break. It seems Huawei's modem not only works, it also outperforms Qualcomm's implementation. You can bet the same tech will go into other Chinese phones as the supply chain is indigenized.
