this is interesting but can't believe so need more clarity.

TSMC is full of US equipments : Applied Materials, KLA, Lam Research, Cymer excimer laser.. so TSMC cannot Fab Huawei chips but @tphuang sir can answer this question.
keep in mind that I don't want to be spreading news/rumors regarding Huawei that is not out there, I generally just leave it to only stuff that's already reported on English news.

I just don't think there is any reason TSMC would be allowed to produce chips for Huawei and so I commented with that

Given that the news is out there now on reuters, I've commented that the rumor for 5G has been floating around a while. I guess we will find out when it gets announced. Huawei does attract a lot of interest, so I don't think they can sneak in a 5G phone without people finding out.

Most likely, I think they will use a Snapdragon SoC and pair it with a Baloong 5G chipset to have support for 5G. It's quite possible that phone won't come out this year, but I think it will at least be announced before end of the year

I think based on what he says here, China is on the same level as Korea & Taiwan currently in terms of SMEs and behind US, Japan & EU

in 12-inch cleaning equipment, Shengmei is leading firm in China. Aside from mainland, its product has also made its way to Korea, Taiwan, America and southeast Asia.

As the importance of immersive process becomes increasingly prominent, its equipment market also is expanding.

80-60nm node, immersive process has > 100 steps

20nm and below, immersive process has > 250 steps
what does Taiwan or SK have? Only one I know of from SK that's a systems integrator is SEMES. Otherwise they can only provide parts, not a full system design. And Taiwan has nothing, barely even parts.

Sir from what I know you need RF chip to support 5G ,Huawei and some domestic suppliers had successfully develop a replacement.

i don't know about that report, but I do know a social media post from someone with Hisilicon said that the Ascend project finished and the next one is Balong. Given that Huawei will not be producing a high end Kirin chip anytime soon, any high end phones they produce that support 5G will need to be paired with Balong chipset

I am honestly surprised to hear that China is on the same level as Korea and Taiwan in SME. I would have imagined they are ahead.
no they're actually nowhere near China. They've always used foreign tools in everything. I thought that was obvious. If they didn't why would they need to comply with foreigners telling them to stop fabbing for China or their tools get cut off?

SME has nothing to do with semiconductors itself. The product differentiation is in stuff like machining cleanliness and precision, corrosion resistance, pressure resistance, surface coatings, etc. For example an etch process can be controlled by a PLC that's built on 0.3 micron tech. All it does is switch valves and heat up. But the key is in the ceramic chamber coating which resists fluorine plasma.

SME are chemical and mechanical product more similar to a car engine or equipment for petrochemicals than actually building semiconductors.

In term of tools, software and materials I think the Chinese supply chain is not just getting more of it but also is growing faster. There is just much more incentive in China to develop this part of the semiconductor supply chain than in SK and Taiwan who can just get everything they need.
I think SK equipment dependency is about 80%, Taiwan is about 70% and in China is about 50%.

The Chinese are exercising their legs, geopolitics is making that 52% of the investment in China is going to upstream part of the supply chain of their semiconductor industry.
View attachment 115114

Affected by geopolitical factors coupled with the downturn of the chip market business cycle, China's semiconductor industry development focus is gradually shifting upstream. During 2021-2022, there were 176 semiconductor materials projects and 56 equipment projects, they took up a combined share of more than 30% of the 742 projects in total.

In comparison, during 2016-2020, there were only 40 semiconductor material projects and 7 equipment projects, accounting for a total of 15.6%.

In other words, the Chinese invested in a single year in the most neglected foreign dominated area of their semiconductor industry DOUBLE of what they invested in four years.

That article is from mid-2019. From the article:
Huawei in the financial call estimated they have created alternatives for 70% of the parts that might be denied them. 90% is likely by the end of 2019.
The current state as of 2023 is certainly far beyond 90%.
