I think based on what he says here, China is on the same level as Korea & Taiwan currently in terms of SMEs and behind US, Japan & EU

in 12-inch cleaning equipment, Shengmei is leading firm in China. Aside from mainland, its product has also made its way to Korea, Taiwan, America and southeast Asia.

As the importance of immersive process becomes increasingly prominent, its equipment market also is expanding.

80-60nm node, immersive process has > 100 steps

20nm and below, immersive process has > 250 steps
I am honestly surprised to hear that China is on the same level as Korea and Taiwan in SME. I would have imagined they are ahead.

come on. take this as a statement. Chinese don't do chest thumping.

China is way ahead from Korea and Taiwan, when it comes to indigenous tools in semiconductor. close to Japan if we count 28nm complete set of tools.

within few years, China will surpass Japan.

I'm surprised because Taiwan and Korea specialize in upstream industries and lack the size or incentive to develop complete supply chains.

absolutely.

South Korean Newspaper last year publish an article. 76 percent tools/materials have imported from EU/Japan/USA. highest percentage

***************************************

in this article, Dr. Wang Hui believes. look at his wording. he believes. means he don't know the current progress and breakthrough Chinese SME did in past 3/4 years. its not a big deal. these high ranked people dont have time to see what's going on in Chinese SME day to day. most of experts still have outdated view. so i don't care

as of now progress -

28nm domestic line has completed.

14nm and below domestic line currently under process. some tools have been verifying.

Chinese SME also exploring domestic 7nm line.

SHENZHEN, China (Reuters) - China's Huawei Technologies is plotting a return to the 5G smartphone industry by the end of this year, according to research firms, signalling a comeback after a U.S. ban on equipment sales decimated its consumer electronics business.

Huawei should be able to procure 5G chips domestically using its own advances in semiconductor design tools along with chipmaking from Semiconductor Manufacturing International Co (SMIC), three third-party technology research firms covering China's smartphone sector told Reuters.

The research firms, citing their own industry sources, believe Huawei's EDA software could be used with SMIC's N+1 manufacturing process to make chips at the equivalent of 7 nm, the powerful semiconductors typically used in 5G phones.
Now the timing of the Micron ban and the Ga Ge export restrictions make sense. China can now survive a full semiconductor equipment cutoff by the US and it's vassals. Can the US survive a full cutoff of semiconductor materials by China?

I wonder what would happen to countries with the "If China can do it, we can do it too!" mentality once the shackle of SME sanctions applied on China breaks. It would also serve a severe blow to the perception regards to effectiveness of sanctions, especially to China. No matter how loud one screams of "Stealin' IP", whether true or not, the end result matters, and will surface and screams back "in your face, b%tch!"
