Don't worry, I am pretty sure that they will be able to make it competitive. These guys are relentless.

At 50% yield that is pretty damn good already for its first or second iteration at it.

Wasn't there a story about Samsung and their 5nm attempts and yields were around 20%-30% which means that it don't even work sort of thing.

The only point I find interesting about this estimate of yield from this anti-China person, is that how did he know they were going to go ahead an produce these chips?

Usually, these anti-China people are the last to know about anything that happens or will happen inside China.

The forecast yield rate of less than 50% means that 5G chips are "going to be costly", said Doug Fuller who researches chips at the Copenhagen Business School.

"I guess if Huawei wants to eat the cost they can do this, but I don't see such chips as price competitive," Fuller said.

Huawei has enough following that people will pay premium tax for a "super phone" like the Mate X/Foldables

I don’t know why people complain about this. Are Chinese companies suppose to magically poof chips into existence? Ramping up localization, expansion, and production takes time. We know that SMIC does make some but that capacity is likely reserved for important projects and leading companies. Not to mention that 1 or 2 years ago during a call SMIC said they could only fill 10% of domestic demand at that time.

I see lots of people try to play down the demand/importance of advanced node process,when talk about Chinese semiconductor industry. They say something like "China can only make mature nodes is no big deal,there is not much demand of advanced nodes anyway" "advanced node is too expensive,no one is going to buy it" "mature node is good enough for China,we don't need advanced node" etc.

The truth is,there is always a huge demand for advanced node,in the global as well as in China. Saying China can be satisfied with mature nodes is nonsense

3years ago, Doug Fuller believed that SMEE was decades away from having lithography tools.

some news from electronica China 2023 in Shanghai

Shanghai Wayon electronics unveiling a whole bunch of power chips of different voltage for PV inverters, ESS and auto chips. As I see this, I wonder if this is an example of the new fabless houses booming in China that SMIC was talking about. As more of these firms enter supply chain, it will help SMIC performance
