Global major suppliers are Yunnan Germanium, Umicore, Yunnan Chihong Zn and Ge, Teck, Zhonghao Technology, AXT Inc, JSC Germanium, Shenzhen Zhongjin Lingnan, PPM Pure Metals, Sihuan Zinc and Germanium, Indium Corporation, GEAPP and Photonic Sense. Most of those suppliers are based in China. During them, Yunnan Germanium is the market leader with production share of 25%.

Of course the strong message from China to US is "you can't keep banning anything you want, as much as you want. There are consequences". But US will use this to further push for decoupling (at least for Western countries).

We are definitely entering a new chapter in this tech war.

BTW interesting the timing of the ban, just hours after the announcement of Yellen's visit. This "trick" to welcome the guest with some odd ball, just before the visit, is a thing Chinese have learned from Blinken and Sullivan (two of Biden's ventriloquists). I already noted in the past that they did it on multiple occasion, eventually China liked it.

Seems like this will be huge for large GaN producers
IMO the actual meat of this restriction will probably be pretty mild, but it's symbolically important as the first time that China has used its rare earth dominance for retaliation.

Going so far over a pretty low-impact ban on a few DUV models would be weird. I view this more as an implicit warning that going any further restrictions will result in actually significant rare earth controls than as a big retaliation in itself.
