btw, rumors going pretty strong now that YMTC got cut off from its KRF photoresist suppliers.

Good thing Shanghai Sinyang has validated with YMTCs 128 layer process since 2021 and has been producing photoresist from them since second half of 2021 and delivering to them this year

Looks like according to this, they have also started producing Arf photoresist, but only got orders at end of last year.

Looks like they've been working with 北方集成电路技术创新中心, why is SMNC wholly owned subsidiary (

) built a Arf photoresist verification platform back in 2021 and has been validating since.

It seems like they are preparing this for start of SMIC Jingcheng fab and their Arf product will be usable for 90 to 14nm and even 7nm process.

there is information about Red Avenue New Materials under Beijing Kehua is researching euv photoresist

Chinese photoresist companies' stocks post massive gains on the news of YMTC sanctions... market sentiment is also very telling. The marginal effect of new sanctions is rapidly diminishing.
Always confusing to see red = positive, but great to see.

This sort of phenomenon is why the US government is now trying to ban investors (first US investors, but later surely expanding to US allies' investors) from investing in Chinese chips & equipment companies. They are well aware that any attempts to restrict foreign suppliers will massively boost China's domestic suppliers' market share, and thus cause capital out flow from those foreign suppliers, and capital in flow into Chinese domestic suppliers.

This is an important financial lesson in how sanctions function as a strategic weapon. Having a huge market (as China does for chips, since it consumes 50%+ of the world's chips supply) makes it difficult for opponents to sanction you just by cutting off supply, since it basically results in a capital transfer from foreign suppliers to domestic players. Consequently, they have to also cut off capital access. Naturally, China's counter then is to transfer capital into the chips industry from other sectors, which is one of the goals of the recent ministry reforms - to facilitate "all of society" coordination against sanctions & capital denial.

I don't think this is related to YMTC being put in entity list. SMIC was added to the so-called entity list in December 2020, and until today, they always got their photoresist. Japanese photoresist is 100% made in Japan, there is no US technology there, so entity list cannot affect it.

Maybe it is one of the points of the non-public agreement between US Japan and Holland of a couple of months ago.

If YMTC and SMIC succeed in keeping their fabs running in this critical 2023, it will be a huge success. US will do all they can to shut them down. IMO they realized that China is almost out of the tunnel now, and they will go all in with their so called "allies".

If really Japan accepted to operate in such a savage way, outside of any law and business practice, for them will be game over in China within few years.

Bro I know it's from YT, is TARGET MATERIAL one of them?

In 2020, He Jilin, a professor of Chinese Academy of Engineering, led a team to successfully develop the key technology for the preparation of high-performance ITO sputtering targets, achieving a breakthrough from 0 to 1 for high-end ITO targets. In the same year, the team of Professor Liu Qing of Chongqing University developed an ultra-high-purity metal target project, which made high-end targets available for Chinese chips. At that time, the Chinese media described this technology as a single-point chip breakthrough.

Yes I posted about that investment earlier

It seems like the natsec times for whatever reason just hate certain Chinese fabs more than others. Ymtc got on that list so they are going to do all they can to sink it.

But I am posting these news to show they are getting close to the point of having all the necessary tools and materials to make everything themselves.

The reality is that once you lose your market share in china, you will never get it back. And now, Japanese photoresist producers have just shot themselves in the foot. There was no good reason to do them when ymtc has Chinese suppliers already.

On the other hand, Chinese govt need to provide capital for Shanghai sinyang to ramp up production. 1500t a year is clearly not enough. They need 10000t a year probably.

Chinese govt should promote an alliance, a collaboration for emergency reasons among Chinese photoresist producers. For example Nata has almost all ready but they miss key critical foreign testing equipment. They could share what they have with others, so even if they cannot produce the photoresist themselves, they can provide chemical precursors / monomers etc. so to quickly increase production capacity at national level.

The risk of Japan cutting all photorsist (Arf + KrF) for SMIC and YMTC is real. This would mean stop of production. Far more dangerous than a ban on equipment.

Havok said XinYang has 10.628 ton of KrF capacity at the moment, not sure if that is sufficient
