More on Loongson. I'm trying to figure out if this is the real case with Loongson for much of 2021/2022.
Now, MIPS is bad and they certainly had a lot of work to do to get LoongArch ISA developed and into the current state
I do think they made a mistake not exporting it to Russia. Why not allow other countries to use it if it can broaden the pool of developers?
Anyhow, they seem to have come out with a broad set of CPUs in 2022 after they determined that LoongArch has good performance, compatible with MIPs, ARMS and X86 through translation and doesn't infringe on any copyright (they have full license). With these changes, it seems like 3A5000 is the first somewhat competitive CPU they developed using LoongArch.
Within just a year and half, they finished the designs for 3A6000 and measured it's performance to 30 to 60% better than 3A5000 despite using similar generation of process (3A5000 uses SMIC 14nm, 3A6000 uses SMIC 12nm like 3C5000). My guess is that N+1 capacity at SMIC is limited and doesn't have great yield, so 12nm process is the one with enough spare capacity at high yield. So the fact they can get this kind of CPU improvement on the most advanced mature SMIC process is a pretty big deal. Phytium/Hygon processors probably all require N+1 to get similar performance bump.
Most recently, they told us 3A6000 is getting taped out and have yet to start sales. I'm assuming they will officially put it on sale at around middle of next year. 3A7000 development hasn't started. Guess they want to put this on SMIC's N+1 process. Again, notice the massive drop in revenue YoY (down 37.55 for Q1 to Q3).
So given what they've done so far, I now have higher outlook for Loongson/LoongArch in the future. Given sanctions with ARM, it's probably desirable for Chinese chip makers to concentrate on both RISC-V and LoongArch.
