Should HongMeng OS (Harmony OS) be pushed around so that it would become a uniquely made-by-China OS (not just made-in-China), instead of just a Huawei-specific OS?

Lets suppose that this is probably not going to be TSMC biggest mistake, let suppose that the differences in wages and working culture is not going to eat this venture revenue "IDK, for some reason the pure and play foundry model works in Asia". Who are going to be this foundries clients? The clients are not going to be mainland China companies, nor Koreans. The main clients are probably going to be big US companies, so the DPP has trapped Taiwan, unable to sell the best chips to mainland China companies and losing revenue to the U.S.
If this venture is "successful" it could probably give meaning to the famous phrase "To be an enemy of the US is dangerous, but to be a friend is fatal" because this could doom that island precious semiconductor industry.

Even TSMC executives say that will not be an easy task, the Asian foundry model is not something that is easy to replicate in the West. This could lead to prices increases and inefficiencies.

I not gonna lie but this caught me by surprise given that fact US toolmakers had virtually a revenue monopoly in chipmaking tools. but could be that they probably getting tools made in South East Asia, Taiwan and mainland China by US companies, that are more available than US made tools and they may even shipped some Chinese tools, including etching tools and parts, if TSMC is in this rush to built this fab.

Hongmeng OS is not just for Huawei... Huawei has shared Hongmeng's source code with China... but... except Honor, and ex-Huawei employee companies...other companies they fear US sanctions more than tigers eat them...unless China solves all the chips on phones.. at least they will join in 2026-2027

Demand for auto chips like IGBT is so high that power chip makers are having no problem finding people willing to invest in their projects. In this case, Silan Chengdu is getting another 500 million RMB of investment. Silan remains the controlling shareholder in this project.

From previous announcement

, this project received 3 billion RMB of capital initially in order to ramp up to 7.2 million modules a year when fully built.

Demand for IGBT in China is so high that IDMs can't increase capacity fast enough.

Interesting article here just talking about how booked up the chip requirements are. Funny part how they said foreign fab are generally cautious in their IGBT expansion. Capacity expansion takes time (2 years). Largest players like Infineon, Fuji and Mitsubishi have to balance the high Capex with demand level. Auto grade IGBTs are also different than other IGBTs and can't be produced on the same production line. Recently, Infineon invested 1.6 billion EUR in a new 12inch fab and started production in Aug 2021, but production is still limited

So I think this article just illustrated how much faster the Chinese auto chip production is increasing vs their foreign competitors. And this is mostly due to the insane demand from Chinese EV makers.

比亚迪在去年年底与士兰微、斯达半导、时代电气、华润微签订IGBT供货订单
According to this, BYD put in IGBT orders with Silan Micro, ST, CRRC and CR Micro, basically all of BYD semi's domestic competition. That's how badly it needed the chips.

Chinese storage companies and other companies are expected to be excluded from the US "unverified list"

According to news from Jiwei.com, according to Bloomberg News, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce is helping Chinese companies to conduct US end-use investigations to ensure that the US's cutting-edge technology will not be used by the Chinese military. Excluded from the Unverified List".

China’s Ministry of Commerce is helping domestic companies pass U.S. end-use inspections, requiring the companies to be removed from the U.S. unverified list, according to people familiar with the matter.

On October 7, the United States included 31 Chinese companies or entities into the "unverified list" (unverified list), including Yangtze River Storage, North Huachuang, Pioneer Advanced, Shanghai Microelectronics, etc. In addition to the other 50 companies that were previously on the list, if the United States fails to complete the end-use on-site inspection of the above-mentioned companies by December 6, proving that their products will not be used for military end-uses, the earliest will be December 6. The day will include relevant companies in the Entity List (trade blacklist), which restricts trade with US companies or companies that use US-sourced technology without US permission.

Enterprises such as Yangtze River Storage, Shanghai Microelectronics, and North Huachuang are currently on the unverified list. According to people familiar with the matter, their 60-day period expired on December 5, but no announcement from the US side is expected for the time being. In addition, it is unclear which Chinese companies have undergone U.S. end-use inspections.

China's Ministry of Commerce and the United States declined to comment.
