hi gelgoog, WTAN,

So in the end, the lack of EUVL , the tools for research and the sanction is the reason for his resignation? So what can we expect from SMIC from now on, his presence there has created an impact his leaving may have created a greater impact, lets hope his team is up to the job or we may to wait for another decade to see major progress.

Where will be his next employment coming from, both TSMC and SAMSUNG is a no go, having burn their bridges with them. Intel or Huawei?
If Huawei is smart, they should hire him. Now Huawei can become even more independent.

Hi Peter2018,

That's what I'm thinking, but what kind of tools Huawei may offer ,they may just finished it's 45nm FAB, will Mr Liang willing to work with that compare to what he used to have in SMIC (ASML 38nm twin scan DUVL )? I'm leaning more on Intel, or it maybe a ploy to get major concession from SMIC?

Hi WTAN,

I'm really hope so, a newbie question, can he do research using a SMEE 45NM DUVL? what can he contribute when Huawei itself is just starting?
I was just kidding Ansy.
Currently Huawei cant do much even with his skills.
But who knows.......ICRD and Huawei might want him to hang around and eventually help them with Chip Designs and Production when the Chinese EUV becomes available.
Unfortunately Mr Liang may never be able to go to the USA again as earlier this year there were rumours that Neo-Con Loonies in the Trump Regime wanted to arrange for his arrest and jailing on charges of Spying etc. Probably end up in Jail for life like Meng Wanzhou.
Mr Liang may find that the safest place for him to be is staying in China.
I dont think the Taiwanese or South Korean Government would be too happy with him either.

Hi WTAN,

So his only option is SMIC, his resignation is a really a ploy for concession? Mr Liang had stamped his mark on SMIC. Reading the reaction of most people, he may get what he wants cause he deserved it. I think SMIC will reject his resignation ,talk to him and find a way to settle their difference.

Yes quite likely he will stay at SMIC and wait till the EUV Lithograph arrives.
He could also join another smaller FAB in China.
In any case China is where most of the investments in new FABs are being made. It would be pointless for him to go elsewhere unless he has decided to retire.

Years ago, I was so used to hearing excuses upon excuses on the repeated delays in the introduction of 28 nm process. These change however after Mr Liang joined SMIC. Development of new processes were on schedule or even ahead. In fact, I'm taken by surprise by the announcement of N+1 and N+2 processes so soon after 14nm success. The taping out of new chip based on N+1 process recently cannot be more timely in the face of escalating US-China tech war. The fooliness of recalling your most skilled general in the midst of a war against a much superior opponent is simply beyond comprehension.

Hi LalaBi,

I'm with you 100%, but I think there is a misunderstanding between him and top management (the CEO needed to be reprimand to let this thing happen), as texx1 explain it's office petty politics. For most people Mr Liang is SMIC, he truly leaves a mark in the Chinese IC industry. Or maybe his success may bloated his ego and demanded to be heard.

If you read his statement, it is full of arrogance, but a fully qualified and deserved arrogance!! Take a look on COMAC C919/ARJ21 projects or LOONGSON project. Full of sweet promises, not a total failure but fall well short of expectation. Not unlike people like Steve Job or Elon Musk, these people are not the nicest guys around...super demanding, highly ambituous and perfection seeking but paired with such a brilliant mind and can-do attitude. Liang, by all account, has succeed beyond the wildest expectations wherever he is. A general reigns supreme in the battlefield..he is to be provided with full resources and supports, not to be restrained or doubted. China's long history have many examples of wars being lost due to the enemy sowing discord between the ruler and his general. Believe there will be popping of champagnes in a far far away land shall Liang really quit for once and all.
