That is not business.

Apple did not exactly disappear when Jobs died.

Same with Micro$oft after Gates left, it kept going up in the business world.

Anyone can be replaced in business.

Anyone.

What is interesting is that resignation letter, clearly it indicates the Chinese fab is ahead of any American fab.

True, Apple didn't die with Steve Jobs and in fact got a lot richer over the years. However, what revolutionary product comparable to the IPhone or IPad have they released since Jobs' death?

Apple was almost bankrupt by the time Steve Jobs came back in. The company was mostly irrelevant.
He came back in and in a quick succession they launched MacOS X, iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad.
Now that he's dead Apple hasn't done anything major just like you said.
Just look at the bio of the current CEO. He used to be the COO. He is a beancounter with some experience in squeezing suppliers and trimming the logistics chain. He's not a visionary by any means like Jobs was. He's perfectly fine as COO material but not as CEO.

I'd be more worried if talent of Jim Keller's caliber leaves your company than an executive.

This man is basically responsible for Apple and AMD's catchups.

The important thing is: Has mainland scientists learned everything they needed to from Liang. It's how mainland companies hire foreigners. They want you to teach what you know to their people.

I hope he goes to some place like Shanghai Huali (HLMC) who manufacture X86 processors that compete against Intel and AMD.
They have access to about the same kind of tools as SMIC does (ASML DUV immersion litho) but are stuck at 28nm I think.
That means Zhaoxin has to outsource manufacture of latest chips to TSMC.

Hi gelgoog,

That will never happen , with the current Chinese xenophobia being prevalent in the US, he will be condemn as a traitor if he accept the job.

Shanghai Huali is, as the name implies, in Shanghai.

Also, don't think the US wouldn't accept him working at Intel in the blink of an eye. Intel is that desperate. If the US could accept Nazis belonging to the SS who used slaved labor like von Braun don't think they wouldn't accept him. At least while he was useful.

I think they pretty much have. Remember that previously (when SMIC was stuck at 28nm), he got his co-executive fired and moved the ball forward. I think he moved it forward as much as he could and now other priorities have come into play.

In any event, SMIC is just a consumer of technology, what happens there is secondary to the story. The real story is happening quietly at SMEE and its upstream suppliers.
Liang Mengsong is a huge loss. Probably set SMIC back by half a decade at least.
Highly unlikely. If this were the case, he would have been given anything he wanted to stay on board.

Why would they have to release anything "revolutionary" when their established products are still so lucrative? And what did Jobs himself come up with after the iCrap? To paraphrase Janet Jackson, what had he done lately?

Hi gelgoog ,
