From what I read, Liang Mong Song deserves respect, however, the company is doing the right thing. Moving ahead to N+1 and N+2 and sub-7nm is useless if the company doesn't have the SME to manufacture it. It is just like Huawei's HiSilicon. What SMIC needs to focus on now that it is sanctioned, is a sustainable business model under sanction. How to generate revenue and profit in a sustainable way at the low end, using the equipment it can buy while under sanction. Once it is making money, it can then invest in more R&D. Otherwise it will end up like Tsinghua Unigroup.

The board did the right thing. But, Liang's contributions definitely should be more respected and he should not be offended. I don't think it's personal, it's a strategic decision but... they should have told him. I hope he can stay in China and still contribute to other foundries that are not under sanction. The technology is useless if it is just sitting there not being used. Might as well give it to another company, like Huawei selling off Honor.

Liang Mengsong is a huge loss. Probably set SMIC back by half a decade at least.
That is not business.

Apple did not exactly disappear when Jobs died.

Same with Micro$oft after Gates left, it kept going up in the business world.

Anyone can be replaced in business.

Anyone.

What is interesting is that resignation letter, clearly it indicates the Chinese fab is ahead of any American fab.

N+1 and N+2 and 7nm have nothing to do with EUV. SMIC has already purchased the equipment to manufacture these chips. If the US decided to sanction SMIC, then the sanction would affect more than just N+1, +2 but also 14nm and 28nm.

I am more worry about the infighting. It isn't the first time that happened. SMIC is just not the champion like Huawei or even BOE.

The guy has previously made this complaint of not being respected.
SMIC has lots of internal politics.

I've said this before, but some think the taiwanese he hires there are just screwing around and bullshitting the mainland for 3 mil RMB/year.

This on top of complaints that progress is too slow for the higher ups is probably why people disrespect him.

This is a departure from mainland Chinese culture fighting in the open for everyone to see and enjoy. This is typically Taiwanese and Hongkongnese.

Why don't they disqualify some legislators for misbehaving in the Taiwan legislature? Like in Hong Kong they have already done so to some of their legislators for slinging brownish stinky stuff during their meetings?
