From what I read, Liang Mong Song deserves respect, however, the company is doing the right thing. Moving ahead to N+1 and N+2 and sub-7nm is useless if the company doesn't have the SME to manufacture it. It is just like Huawei's HiSilicon. What SMIC needs to focus on now that it is sanctioned, is a sustainable business model under sanction. How to generate revenue and profit in a sustainable way at the low end, using the equipment it can buy while under sanction. Once it is making money, it can then invest in more R&D. Otherwise it will end up like Tsinghua Unigroup.
The board did the right thing. But, Liang's contributions definitely should be more respected and he should not be offended. I don't think it's personal, it's a strategic decision but... they should have told him. I hope he can stay in China and still contribute to other foundries that are not under sanction. The technology is useless if it is just sitting there not being used. Might as well give it to another company, like Huawei selling off Honor.
