Hi Crang,

So they are having problems with their 10nm and 7nm Chips and are afraid they will be left out. Solution is state subsidize and TSMC tech by building a FAB in Arizona (5nm), the US also manage to convince SAMSUNG to build. The way I see it the American plan to consolidate both upstream and downstream production maybe use that to deny or delay China tech development. Let's see if Japan, Europe and SK are willing to participate.

The letter itself is total bogus. "That means that without a national strategy to protect America’s fairly powerful semiconductor industry "- give me a break. Only way America can "protect" it's semi industry is to maintain the brain drain. Without it, it would be like manhattan project to develop atom bomb without knowing how fission works.

Most critical & important paragraph from that article ---

In theory, the Greater Bay Area will eventually attract Chinese students who studied in elite U.S. institutions like MIT or CalTech, or have spent a couple years at Silicon Valley incubators, VC firms, and cut their teeth inside companies like Intel and Apple . Ideally, these Chinese nationals will be ready to come home to raise China to a whole other level. And why not? It’s their home. It’s their culture. Their market is booming, whereas a decade ago it was non-existent.

I thought I read a story somewhere that said Huawei was buying stuff from SMIC.

Production is not declining at SMIC is my impression. Revenue keeps increasing.

If revenue is increasing, but customers are leaving, the only conclusion we can arrive at is that someone is total wrong or lying.

It sounds like propaganda. The United States is winning their war against Huawei and SMIC, (according to propaganda) but in reality it is losing their war against Huawei and SMIC.

In my view looking at revenue from Q3 or what's been reported in the past is misleading. The sanctions haven't even kicked in yet. Look at where they are in two or three years. I won't be surprised if they end up like Tsinghua Unigroup.

SMIC won't end up like Tsinghua Unigroup because they actually have a viable business model.
If they get sanctioned and can't get the latest tools, they can use Chinese tools and survive from that.

Kyle Bass and Gordon Chang have no credibility outside of Faux News.

Some days, even the networks have doubts.

The following video covers several topics. The first part shows Indian employees RIOTING at Apple factory in India over wage disputes. Other topics include Apple - Qualcomm rocky relationships and new RISC-V processor. Huawei should wean itself off ARM processor and consider using RISC-V , like the new Ali Baba one.

While this can be done for server side chips, for smartphones ARM has just too large of an application and software base.
