Welp, this is the beginning of China's crackdown on the semiconductor industry. You can expect to see it go the way of EdTech, Internet Platform, Real Estate, Crypto, Games, etc. Banned, bankrupt, shrinking, and collapsing, mass layoffs, etc. I knew the arrest of this MIIT guy was bad news. It seems as I said, the U.S. and China want the same thing for Chinese tech: destruction. Who said relations between the two countries are bad?

According to the comments I saw, the thing is this:By virtue of their position and the power to control funds, these officials invested in these companies with "potential in the stock market" and sold them after the stock price rose.
In other words, these funds have not become investment in R & D and production. They are using the national money to speculate in stocks.

Except in each of these sectors the change made was to reduce or eliminate unnecessary dependency.

Edtech - remove unscrupulous 'institutions' sucking up time and money

Internet platform - monopoly busting

Real estate - crackdown on unsustainable property investment

Crypto - need I say more. The biggest scam this century

Games - digital crack, no use to society

The day China turns into the US is the day China starts declining

Quickie

Colonel
TSMC's Former General Counsel Richard Thurston on the CHIPSAct : use it as the opportunity to get more involved in the US.

Does the act take into consideration multi-patterning?

In theory, a 28nm lithography machine can be used to manufacture 14nm and even 7nm chips with multi-patterning and could end up on the banned list if the answer to the above question is a yes.

Well that's insider trading. If that's the issue, the officials will be punished individually, but the companies didn't do anything wrong. I would have no problem with that, as long as it doesn't interfere with investment in R &D and production. But if the recent past is an indicator, there is going to be policies that crack down hard on funding, companies, innovation, etc. and of course research is going to suffer.

Except in each of these sectors the change made was to reduce or eliminate unnecessary dependency.

That's your view. Suffice to say I disagree with every single one of your points, but nothing I say will change your opinion and likely nothing you say will change mine. The only thing that will settle this is history. 15 or 20 more years of these policies and the truth will begin to come into view. Of course, by that time an epic amount of damage will have been done. I will say that I sincerely hope I am wrong, but I fear I am not.

idk man. Just tell me one time you were right.
And if I do, will you acknowledge it, or look for a reason for why it doesn't count? It's likely a waste of time and a waste of (metaphorical breath).

As a matter of fact not long ago on the topic of semiconductors I wrote:
Ok so this 7nm chip has been out since July 2021 but we are suddenly getting all these mainstream reports about it now, right before a major political push in the US Congress for the CHIPS Act and as there is bureaucratic tussling in the Biden administration for more sanctions on Chinese chipmakers. It seems clear this is all a part of a lobbying push on the part of techno-nationalist US forces to buff up the perception of Chinese capabilities in order to win political battles at home. It may result in more sanctions against China.

have been announced against Chinese chipmakers targeting advanced node production equipment.
